Such confidence will spill over – wewon't even notice it happening – but others will.The Two Orientations of EffortOne way of illustrating this task of translating the practice isto look more closely at how we internalise the teachings. Ifthe kind of effort we make is not coming from a place ofconfidence, not only are we wasting energy, but we couldactually be doing ourselves harm. I see a lot of confusion inthe way many meditators relate to the different types ofeffort required in practice. There is sometimes quite a naïvehope that by endlessly plugging away, doing what they havebeen doing for years, something good will come out of it.These days I feel convinced that there are basically twodifferent and distinct orientations of effort – goal-orientationand source-orientation. For many years I tried to practise byhaving a goal ‘out there’ to strive towards. My understandingof the teachings as I heard them was that this was what Ishould be doing. I received instruction in varioustechniques, which were oriented towards realisation of thisgoal. The goal was called ‘enlightenment’ or ‘the deathless’and so on, but it was always ‘out there in the future’. I wasencouraged to make great effort to achieve the goal and tobreak through those things that obstructed progress towardsit. And even when the words didn’t directly say that the goalwas ‘out there’, that was the message that I heard. EventuallyI found myself in a terribly frustrating knot. At one point Ifelt that my whole commitment to practice was seriouslychallenged. Gratefully, with some help, I came to realise thatthe struggle I was caught in was about the very feeling ofhaving to get somewhere. I had internalised a sense that I had20
