UMUC reserves the right to take appropriateaction to protect the safety and well-being of the UMUCcommunity.Students may be accountable to both civil authorities and toUMUC for acts that constitute violations of law and of thiscode. Disciplinary action at UMUC will normally go forwardpending criminal proceedings and will not be subject to challengeon the ground that criminal charges involving the sameincident have been dismissed or reduced.To encourage the development and growth of a supportive andrespectful academic environment for all students, faculty, and staff,UMUC has created the Code of Civility, which is available atwww.umuc.edu/students/civility.html and in UMUC publications.In every case of alleged Code of Conduct violation, the burdenof proof rests with the complainant who must establish the guiltof the person accused by clear and convincing evidence. It is imperative that studentsupdate their e-mail address through MyUMUC athttps://my.umuc.edu. Students who do not have a personal e-mailaccount may create one by following the directions provided on theWeb at www.umuc.edu/suppserv/it/hosts/itfaq.shtml. In some classes,students may be required to participate in synchronous computerbasedclass discussions and study group activities.All graduate students are expected to have a working knowledgeof, and access to, a basic word processing program such asMicrosoft Word, a spreadsheet program such as Microsoft Excel,and Internet electronic mail services. Knowledge of MicrosoftWindows and Internet information services such as the WorldWide Web is also necessary.Applicants and students who require further training in the use ofInternet services and basic software packages may wish to consultthe UMUC Undergraduate Schedule of Classes or speak to an undergraduateadvisor regarding appropriate classes. SERVICES AND RESOURCESAvailability of ServicesUMUC provides services and resources to help students all overthe world complete their educational programs—through automatedsystems and resources available online or by telephone,by e-mail and telephone communication, and in person at sitesthroughout the Maryland area. A number of offices are responsiblefor the delivery of these services, including Career Servicesand the offices of Enrollment Management, Financial Aid,Information and Library Services, and Information Technology.Among these, the Office of Student Affairs and the Office ofEnrollment Management (which includes Graduate Advising)respond to most of the student’s academic needs throughouthis or her college career, providing general information; admissionassistance; academic advising; registration, graduation, andtranscript services; veterans benefits assistance; and services fordisabled students.All regional sites offer graduate services.
