COURSE DESCRIPTIONSDMGT (Doctoral Studies inManagement)DMGT 600 Foundations <strong>of</strong> Doctoral Studies (3)An overview <strong>of</strong> doctoral studies in management. Topics include thepurpose and context <strong>of</strong> the doctoral degree program; the role andvalue <strong>of</strong> research and statistical analysis in the practice <strong>of</strong> management;and key concepts in management, leadership, change, andorganizational theory. Degree requirements and the dissertationprocess are explored. Exercises, including the development <strong>of</strong> anindividual journal, are used to evaluate skills in critical thinking,argumentation, and writing expression.DMGT 800 Foundations <strong>of</strong> Management Theoryand Strategic Thinking (6)A comprehensive foundation in the history <strong>of</strong> management and thestructure and function <strong>of</strong> organizations. A new way <strong>of</strong> understandingand managing operational and strategic issues in public and privateorganizations in the face <strong>of</strong> accelerating social, economic, andtechnological changes is provided. Topics include organizational theory,strategic thinking and strategic management, theories <strong>of</strong> decisionmaking, leadership, organizational culture, and managementin a postindustrial society. Problem-solving, application, and evaluationskills are used to analyze the theories and practices <strong>of</strong> currentand emerging organizational challenges and opportunities. The goalis to be able to critically assess the ideas <strong>of</strong> others and defend one’sown ideas through the application <strong>of</strong> scholarship.DMGT 810 Leadership, Enterprise Change,and Virtual Management (6)A study <strong>of</strong> leadership—not just for survival but for sustainability—in environments where external pressure for change is the dominantfeature. Discussion examines change and leadership issues invaried industries, as well as one’s own organization, by identifyingand analyzing theories and concepts, assessing the applicability<strong>of</strong> classic works and current perspectives, testing ideas using casestudies, and developing various scenarios and strategies. Topicsinclude the knowledge and abilities needed for managing change,such as improvisation and reinvention; the roles and skills neededat all levels for leading in new organizational models involvingvirtual teams; and the impact <strong>of</strong> change (particularly frequentchange) on individuals and organizations. The goal is to recognizethe link between leadership, change, and organizational resilienceand apply the lessons.DMGT 820 International Finance and Global Operation (6)An examination <strong>of</strong> four perspectives on strategic management withinan international and global context: strategy and the competenciesthat are required for managers to function effectively, trade and financialissues. the political and legal context <strong>of</strong> decision making whenmany nation states are in play, and issues arising from cultural differencesand their effect on the management <strong>of</strong> firms operating transnationally.Topics include the economic and financial forces affectingthe organization in its internal and external environment and appropriateresponses to these forces in a global context. Discussion alsocovers the forces and values shaping these four perspectives in terms<strong>of</strong> the firm and its industry and how these forces and values mayshape the working strategy <strong>of</strong> a particular firm viewed globally andwithin the context <strong>of</strong> an assigned country.DMGT 830 Research Methods and Design (6)An applied study <strong>of</strong> how to plan, conduct, interpret, and critiqueboth quantitative and qualitative research. Methods are groundedin the philosophy <strong>of</strong> science to provide a solid foundation thatwill support the identification <strong>of</strong> researchable questions, as wellas the selection and application <strong>of</strong> a methodology to a dissertationtopic. Methodologies studied include organizational ethnography,action research, content analysis, and survey research. Assignmentsinclude short analyses representative <strong>of</strong> the different methodologicaltraditions.DMGT 840 Enterprise Continuity and Information Assurance (6)An exploration <strong>of</strong> enterprise continuity as an integral, essential, anddynamic objective for all organizations—governmental, economic,academic, and social—serving to identify and define the organization,establish its boundaries, enable it to function effectively bothinternally and externally, and adapt efficiently to change, even suddenand catastrophic change. Discussion covers the role <strong>of</strong> informationassurance (IA) as an inherent and indispensable component <strong>of</strong>an organization’s risk management program.DMGT 850 Innovation and Sustainable Development (6)A study <strong>of</strong> how technological innovation drives the long-term competitiveness<strong>of</strong> global organizations. The objective is to acquireskills in developing conceptual frameworks for managing sustainableorganizational growth in both private and public sectors.Focus is on critically evaluating the actors and factors for technologicalinnovation and developing concepts for managing technologicalinnovations to improve the creation and delivery <strong>of</strong> newgoods and services in a productivity-based international competitiveenvironment. Discussion covers issues related to technologyresources, technological capacities, capabilities and competencies,and technology strategies for sustained competitive advantage inthe global marketplace.
