The Master<strong>of</strong> Education (MEd) in instructional technology is designed for twobroad groups <strong>of</strong> students: pre-K–12 teachers, administrators, technologyintegration specialists, and staff developers seeking to developexpertise in instructional technology for teaching and learning andother educators and potential career changers interested in technologyintegration in pre-K–12 schools. The curriculum focuses on threeinterrelated areas <strong>of</strong> study: curriculum and instruction, technology,and leadership and management. The program seeks to produce graduateswho have the knowledge and skills needed to incorporate technologyeffectively into pre-K–12 curricula, instruction, and assessment;demonstrate expertise in current and emerging instructionaltechnologies; understand the role <strong>of</strong> technology in the contemporaryschool; and are ready to lead change efforts at the classroom, school,and district levels.Note: The MEd is not an initial teacher preparation program.Graduates who wish to become K–12 teachers in the public schoolsand who do not yet have state licensure to teach may need topursue an initial teacher certification program, based on state ornational requirements.Students interested in coursework related to teacher certificationshould refer to UMUC’s Teacher Education Reading Strand andAlternate Teacher Preparation Program (pp. 67–68).• Create multimedia and Web-based products that advance studentlearning.• Apply technology to meet the needs <strong>of</strong> a diverse school population.• Implement pr<strong>of</strong>essional development for teachers and administratorsrelated to technology integration.• Apply leadership skills to establish a vision for technology integration,ensure access, design technology plans and budgets, andacquire resources.• Use reflection, critical thinking, and research to make sound decisionsregarding technology and student learning, advocate forchange, and build program support.Program OverviewThe Master <strong>of</strong> Education degree program requires 33 credits <strong>of</strong>coursework, including 30 credits <strong>of</strong> core courses and a 3-creditintegrative capstone project.Career Paths• Teacher leader in a school, related to technology integration• Staff developer or technology integration specialist at the school,district, or state level• Developer <strong>of</strong> multimedia for education or training• Distance education teacher for virtual K–12 schoolsPartnershipsUMUC currently <strong>of</strong>fers programs in collaboration with publicschool districts, including Montgomery County Public Schools in<strong>Maryland</strong>.Note: School or district administrators who are interested in developinga cohort program for their school(s) are encouraged to contactthe Teacher Education Department at 301-985-7056.Program ObjectivesGraduates <strong>of</strong> the program will be able to• Integrate technology in the schools to strengthen and transformteaching and student learning.• Use a range <strong>of</strong> technologies to communicate and collaborate withstudents, colleagues, parents, and other audiences.Course descriptions are found on pp. 69–107.16GRADUATE <strong>CATALOG</strong> | 2008–2009
