Representatives can also make sure that callers are onthe UMUC mailing list to receive upcoming class schedules andother important announcements.Admission AssistanceEnrollment specialists serve individuals who are inquiring aboutbecoming UMUC students at some future time or are admittedbut have not yet registered. They can help prospective studentsapply for admission, identify financial aid opportunities, plantheir curriculum, and register for their first session of classes.Enrollment specialists can also help qualified senior citizens applyfor Golden Identification benefits. More information is on p. 127.Prospective and new students may contact an enrollment specialistby phone at 800-888-UMUC or by e-mail at newgrad@umuc.edu.More detailed information on admission is available on p. 115.Automated ServicesA number of automated services are available to currentstudents online through MyUMUC and by telephone throughthe Interactive Registration and Information System (IRIS).Through MyUMUC (available online at https://my.umuc.edu),students have access to many of their personal UMUC records.MyUMUC enables them to change personal information (suchas home address, e-mail address, or phone numbers); register;pay bills; check grades, financial aid status, and student accountstatus; apply for graduation; request certification for VA educationalbenefits and check status of request; and view and printreports (such as their class schedule, grade report, statement ofaccount, and unofficial transcript).Through IRIS, students can register for classes or make changesto their registration. IRIS is available seven days a week, from6 a.m. to 9 p.m. eastern time, at 800-584-9413.AdvisingAll students who have registered in a course are assigned an advisor,who will help guide them through all of the steps that lead to agraduate-level degree or certificate. Advisors will also recommendways for the student to complete academic requirements quicklyand efficiently.Students who have not attended UMUC for a year or moreshould also contact an advisor, once they are readmitted, forassistance in getting back on track.It is up to the student to seek advising and to keep track of hisor her program requirements. Students should retain the catalogof the year they entered their program as it contains all degreerequirements for which they will be held accountable.Whenever possible, students should get advising information inwriting. Students who fail to meet all degree requirements willnot be cleared for graduation.Students may contact advisors by phone, fax, or e-mail. In thelocal metropolitan area, students also have the option of schedulingan appointment with an advisor in person at the sites listed onthe previous page.Evaluation of Transfer CreditAn advisor can help students determine whether any previousgraduate coursework is eligible to be accepted as transfer credit.Up to 6 credits of graduate coursework may be considered fortransfer to most graduate degree programs at UMUC if earnedat a regionally accredited institution and if applicable to the student’sprogram of study. The Graduate School of Managementand Technology will accept up to 3 graduate transfer credits forthe Master of Business Administration or a certificate program.Students should contact their advisors for details.All graduate credits offered for transfer credit must meet thefollowing criteria:1. The credits must have been earned as graduate credit.2. The credits must not have been used to meet the requirementsfor any degree the student previously earned or isexpected to earn.3. The credits must have been awarded within the time limitfor the degree or certificate.4. The student must have earned a grade of B or better in thecourses considered for transfer. (However, these grades arenot included in the calculation of the student’s grade pointaverage.)5. The department advisor and the program director must havedetermined that the transfer courses are relevant to the student’sprogram of study.6. The credits must have been earned at a regionally accreditedinstitution and be equivalent to graduate-level coursework orrecommended for graduate-level credit by the AmericanCouncil on Education (ACE).126GRADUATE CATALOG | 2008–2009
