An introduction to the organization,management, and administration <strong>of</strong> distance education systems.Topics include management theory, organizational behavior,leadership roles, human resource management, employee relations,the impact <strong>of</strong> information technology, faculty/staff development,interinstitutional collaboration, planning, policy, and change. Botheducation and training environments, as well as the knowledge andskills necessary to function effectively in either type <strong>of</strong> organizationalsetting, are explored.DEPM 609 Distance Education Systems (3)(Formerly OMDE 609.) Prerequisites: OMDE 601, OMDE 603,DETT 607 (or OMDE 607), and OMDE 608. An introduction t<strong>of</strong>rameworks for analyzing the nature <strong>of</strong> distance education from afunctionalist, interpretive, or emancipatory systems approach. Appropriatediagramming techniques are used as a means to examine theorganization and management <strong>of</strong> distance education systems.DEPM 622 The Business <strong>of</strong> Distance Education (3)(Formerly OMDE 622.) An examination <strong>of</strong> the highly competitiveglobal business environment for distance education and training.Topics include the supply and demand <strong>of</strong> education services inemerging and existing markets, the competitive positioning <strong>of</strong>organizations, and increasing reliance on collaborations. Emphasisis on the skills distance education managers need in planning anddeveloping programs, products, and services that are targeted tospecific markets and cost-effective.DEPM 625 Distance Education, Globalization,and Development (3)(Formerly OMDE 625.) A study <strong>of</strong> distance education froman international perspective, highlighting developing countries.Processes are explored through concrete case studies in the areas<strong>of</strong> higher education and internationalization; teacher education,school networks, and mobile learning; alternative routes to schooling;nonformal education, community radio, telecenters, andradio browsing; and vocational education and training. Topicsalso cover national and international policies on distance education,including the role <strong>of</strong> the state; international organizations(such as the World Bank or UNESCO) and their policies (e.g.the Millennium Development Goals); telecommunication infrastructure;transnational corporations and the commercialization<strong>of</strong> education; and the World Trade Organization (WTO) andthe General Agreement on Trade in Services (GATS).DETC (Distance Education Technology)DETC 620 Training and Learning with Multimedia (3)(Formerly OMDE 620. Developed by Joachim Hasebrook <strong>of</strong>Germany.) An examination <strong>of</strong> the use <strong>of</strong> digital media in a variety<strong>of</strong> educational settings to identify properties, strengths, and weaknesses<strong>of</strong> multimedia in different learning contexts. Basic psychologicalprocesses <strong>of</strong> perception, understanding, and learning areintroduced. Focus is on multimedia and instructional design foronline learning systems, such as Web-based training. Hands-onexperiences with several multimedia and online learning and informationsystems are provided. Topics also include groupware andcollaborative learning technologies, intelligent systems, instructionalsimulations, and virtual reality systems.DETC 630 Synchronous and AsynchronousLearning Systems in Distance Education (3)An examination <strong>of</strong> synchronous (real-time) and asynchronous(non-real-time) tools and technologies used in online education.Topics include synchronous functions such as text chat andaudio/video conferencing and asynchronous functions such ase-mail, threaded Web discussions, blogs, and wikis. Each communicationmodel is examined critically in both a research andapplied context. Review also covers how synchronous and asynchronousmodes <strong>of</strong> communication are incorporated in learningmanagement systems.DETT (Distance Educationin Teaching and Training)DETT 607 Instructional Design andCourse Development in Distance Education (3)(Formerly OMDE 607.) An examination <strong>of</strong> the instructionaldesign process, its history and place in today’s course developmentefforts, and the use <strong>of</strong> instructional design components in practice.Emphasis is on the nature <strong>of</strong> learning and the requirements foreffective instruction. DETT 611 Library and Intellectual Property Issuesin Distance Education (3)(Formerly OMDE 611.) An overview <strong>of</strong> the development anddelivery <strong>of</strong> digital resources for distance education. Discussioncovers the intellectual property issues affecting the use <strong>of</strong> copyrightedworks in distance education, developing and deliveringlibrary resources online to a faculty and student population, andthe future <strong>of</strong> digital information delivery and the impact <strong>of</strong> digitalrights management (DRM) technologies and social networking.DETT 615 Assessment and Quality Assurancein Distance Education (3)A study <strong>of</strong> quality assessment and quality assurance in distanceeducation within the context <strong>of</strong> quality in education in general.Discussion covers the diverse meanings <strong>of</strong> quality in differentcontexts, the multidimensional nature <strong>of</strong> the concept <strong>of</strong> quality,personal reflections on quality, and the importance <strong>of</strong> quality asan emerging leitmotif in the educational debate. A variety <strong>of</strong>methodological approaches (including quality assessment techniques,quality evaluation, quality criteria and guidelines, qualitybenchmarks, and quality management approaches) are introducedand applied to distance education. Topics also include the connectionbetween accreditation and quality. Quality models are appliedto distance education, and case studies are used to reveal goodpractice in quality assessment and quality assurance in distanceeducation today.DETT 621 Training at a Distance (3)(Formerly OMDE 621.) An examination <strong>of</strong> the role <strong>of</strong> distance trainingin business, nonpr<strong>of</strong>it, and government organizations. A widevariety <strong>of</strong> issues, problems, and solutions in Web-based training areexplored. Topics include the economics <strong>of</strong> distance training, distancetechnology in the business organization, synchronous versus asynchronousinteractive tools, collaborative and problem-solving tools,authoring tools, insourcing versus outsourcing, and the role <strong>of</strong> multimediain distance training. Emphasis is on the concept <strong>of</strong> the corporatevirtual university and its design and operation.DMBA (Business Administration—Dual Degree)DMBA 603 The Marketing <strong>of</strong> New Ideas (6)(Formerly AMBA 603D.) Prerequisite: Completion <strong>of</strong> all requirementsfor the first degree <strong>of</strong> an approved dual-degree program. Anexploration <strong>of</strong> the essentials <strong>of</strong> marketing management: setting marketinggoals for an organization with regard to internal resources andmarketing opportunities, planning and executing activities to meetthese goals, and measuring progress toward their achievement. Focusis on the concept <strong>of</strong> innovation in business, including the introduction<strong>of</strong> new market <strong>of</strong>ferings and the use <strong>of</strong> new technologies, strategies,and tactics for achieving marketing objectives. An integrativeapproach combines discussions on theory <strong>of</strong> marketing managementwith industry analysis and practical implications. Assignments includethe design and marketing <strong>of</strong> innovative products, analysis <strong>of</strong> theapplication <strong>of</strong> modern marketing strategies and tactics using examplesfrom participants’ organizations, and practicing a holistic approach tomarketing management.DMBA 604 Technology and Operations Management (6)(Formerly AMBA 604D.) Prerequisite: DMBA 603. A study <strong>of</strong>project management, operations management, and informationtechnology management—three key areas <strong>of</strong> modern business functionalmanagement. A guide to the project management body <strong>of</strong>knowledge is provided. Topics include how the dos and don’ts <strong>of</strong>managing a project, several world-class operations managementtechniques (such as Six Sigma), and industry best practices in operationalefficiency and effectiveness. The mission, goals, and importance<strong>of</strong> information systems management are assessed, using thestudent’s own work organization as a model. Assignments includethe development <strong>of</strong> an international information systems managementplan.DMBA 606 Organizations and the External Environment (6)(Formerly AMBA 606D.) Prerequisite: DMBA 604. A globaloverview <strong>of</strong> various types <strong>of</strong> business organizations and environmentsthat shape organizational decisions. Emphasis is on theregulatory structures, legal systems, governance models, and policymaking that define the internal and external functions <strong>of</strong> businessat the confluence <strong>of</strong> local, state, national, and international affairs.Topics include critical thinking, international ethics, business sustainability,social responsibility, and the impact <strong>of</strong> economics andtechnology.
