USA Education SystemB. ChristansenIt may surprise some readers the US Constitution does not mention education—nordoes it mention an official language (Cornell University Law School, 2012). In fact,there is no national curriculum in the country, but states, school districts, and nationalassociations suggest certain standards for school instruction (US Department of Education,2012). Education in the USA has a pattern similar to that of many other nations.For example, early childhood education is followed by primary school (called elementaryschool in the United States), middle school, secondary school (called high schoolin the United States), and then postsecondary (tertiary) education. Postsecondary educationincludes non-degree programs that lead to certificates and diplomas plus sixdegree levels: associate, bachelor, first professional, master, advanced intermediate,and research doctorate. The American system does not offer a second or higher doctorate,but does offer post doctorate research programs. Adult and continuing education,plus special education, cut across all educational levels (US Department of Education,2012).Accreditation is the process used in US education to ensure that schools, postsecondaryinstitutions, and other education providers meet, and maintain, minimum standardsof quality and integrity regarding academics, administration, and related services.It is a voluntary process based on the principle of academic self-governance. Schools,postsecondary institutions and programs (faculties) within institutions participate inaccreditation. The entities which conduct accreditation are associations comprised ofinstitutions and academic specialists in specific subjects, who establish and enforcestandards of membership and procedures for conducting the accreditation process (USDepartment of Education, 2012).Both the federal and state governments recognize accreditation as the mechanismby which institutional and programmatic legitimacy are ensured. In international terms,accreditation by a recognized accrediting authority is accepted as the US equivalent ofother countries' ministerial recognition of institutions belonging to national educationsystems.The US Department of Education does not have the authority to accredit private orpublic elementary or secondary schools, and the Department does not recognize accreditingbodies for the accreditation of private or public elementary and secondary11
