3.1 GRAMMARIntroduction<strong>Grammar</strong> has been a familiar part of the school teaching language formany years , and its familiarity has given rise to some inconsistencies inthe same use of the word grammar . Some elementary grammar booksintroducing a foreign language are entitled <strong>English</strong> <strong>Grammar</strong> or <strong>Grammar</strong>in use ( Robins:1980,142) ,For several last years <strong>English</strong> grammar teachingin schools has been a the subject of criticism , some people believe thatthere is no correlation between teaching grammar and pupils’ improvementin writing of <strong>English</strong> ( Kohli:1999,138 ) .Protherough and King (1995 :106 ) didn’t prefer the narrow definitionof grammar as the analysis of parts of speech and sentence structure , asthey believed that these definitions will encourage bad practice of teachinggrammar exercise .3.2 Definitions of the term grammar :Different definitions of the term grammar were given i n different ages ,the differences are important . Some of these definitions refer to thetheoretical or practical point of view , Barnard (1858 : 755 ) said that a lotof writers defined grammar as the art of speaking and writing correctlywhereas others believed that grammar is a guide to a correct understandingof language through its words and forms of speech .22
