4.1 Concept MapsIntroductionConcept maps first suggested by Joseph Novak , who has studied theeducation field as an aid for learners to increase understanding( Richardson et . al : 2005 ) . The strategy was born out of theconstructivist theory of learning which holds that the learner constructs orbuilds his own knowledge as opposed to the previous one ( Basso andMargarita : 2004 ) .The idea was based on the Ausubels’ assimilation theory of cognitivelearning who sees that the meaningful learning takes place when newknowledge is consciously incorporated into the concepts and ideaspreviously acquired by the learner ( Clark and James : 2004 ; 224 ) .Ausubels advocates the use of the advanced organiser which is based onthe idea that the teacher is given a short description to the new materialbefore the lesson to prepare the students to accept the new material ( Reeceand Walker : 2003 ; 87 ) .4.2 What are concept maps ?concept map is visualised through a graphical representation. Conceptsare usually depicted by circles or boxes , forming the nods of the new workby labelled links (Buzzetto-More :2007 ;61 ) .59
