Hebelieves that grammar can be learnt through the process of learning and itcould be learnt by imitation or consciously by observation and deduction .For him functional grammar gives the learner the ability to speak and writecorrectly .Lock ( 1996 : 1 ) sees the main purpose of a language is communicationand analyzing grammar to allow the speakers and the writers to exchangethe meanings where never it is possible and necessary .2- Formative grammar :<strong>Grammar</strong> has been described as a set of rules that govern the languagesystem , so formal grammar deals with rules and forms which should beorganized to be used later . Kohli ( 1999 :141 ) sees that formal grammardeals with terminology , it describes and analyze s the language . Brownand Miller and Brown ( 1980 :60 ) assume formal grammar refers to the36
description of forms , but not to the sense of individual forms nor to themeaning of the whole statement .Lapalombara ( 1976 :54 ) concluded the relation between the two typesof grammar. She believes that it is not possible to separate betweenfunctional and formal grammar . Both types deal with words and wordgroups , so forms can make different functions and functions can not beachieved without forms .3.8 Traditional grammar :Traditional grammar was widely used by teachers in the classroomthrough giving definitions for the part of speech or by giving the systematicrules of grammar (Woods :1995 ;6 ) .Guth (1973 : 41 ) said that traditionalgrammar concentrates on the good organization of words and relationshipsbetween the words in a sentence , so it deals with the syntactic organizationof words in a sentence .3.8.1 Criticism of traditional grammar :Traditional grammar faced some criticism , Kohli ( 199 9: 143 ) andGuth (1973 : 46 ) said that :1. Traditional grammar is based on Latin grammar , but the t wo languageshave different structure features, so it is not allowed to ad opt the samerules in different languages .37
