Their responsibilities include, but arenot limited to, making faculty recruitment recommendations and facultydevelopment, initiating and reviewing programs, obtaining andmaintaining accreditation, advising students, managing their unit’s budget,planning class schedules, and supervising research and scholarly activitiesof the unit.1.4.2.1.1 Dean, School of Graduate StudiesThe Dean is responsible for advancing the mission of the School ofGraduate Studies, which is to provide quality instruction in both basicand applied research to students who have excelled at thebaccalaureate level; and, to prepare them for careers as leaders inteaching, the professions, research, and service. A principle charge ofthe Dean of the School of Graduate Studies is assisting the <strong>University</strong>in creating a universal community of scholars and adult learnerscommitted to the lifelong discovery and application of knowledge,particularly in matters related to urban communities, that will enrichthe lives for new graduate courses, review of existing graduateprograms, the criteria for graduate faculty, the disbursement offinancial assistance to graduate students, the general welfare ofgraduate students, publication of the graduate catalog and otherinformation related to the School of Graduate Studies, and recruitmentof graduate students. The Dean of the School of Graduate Studiessupervises the Director of the Institute for Urban Research and theDirector of the Continuing Studies Program.1.4.2.1.1.1 The Center for Continuing StudiesThe Center of Continuing Studies is responsible for managingSummer, Weekend, Minimester (winter session), Independent Study,and Academic Recovery Programs. Additional responsibilitiesinclude overseeing non-credit programs, Continuing Education Units(CEU), funded projects, corporate partnerships, community outreachand certificate programs as well as providing advisement andcounseling services for students.1.4.2.1.1.2 Institute for Urban ResearchThe Institute for Urban Research is the primary social scienceresearch and training arm of <strong>Morgan</strong> <strong>State</strong> <strong>University</strong>. The Institute’sexperienced researchers seek to improve the response ofgovernmental, non-governmental, private, and other institutions to thechallenges of poverty, unemployment, poor health, truancy, and otherurban and regional problems. Through its Community DevelopmentResource Center, Family Life Center, and Survey Research Center,the Institute provides a wide range of research and outreach servicesthat include technical assistance to community-based agencies inBaltimore and Central Maryland. The Institute provides manyopportunities for students to develop research skills and to gain
