PAGE 30 * <strong>Morgan</strong> <strong>State</strong> <strong>University</strong> Faculty Handbook2.1.3 Special Positions2.1.3.1 Visiting AppointmentsVisiting - The prefix "Visiting" before an academic title (e.g., "VisitingProfessor") shall indicate a special appointment without eligibility for promotionand/tenure. An appointee given this rank is usually associated with another academicinstitution or other employer. The rank accorded to a "Visiting" appointee shall begranted based on the same criteria required for the <strong>University</strong>’s regular and full-timeappointees holding the ranks of Assistant Professor, Associate Professor andProfessor. An appointment to the rank of “Visiting” Professor, Associate Professor, orAssistant Professor shall have no effect until such time as a fully executedemployment contract is executed by the President (or the President’s designee) andthe appointee. Prior to the existence of a fully executed employment contract betweenthe parties, no employment relationship exists between the parties, and the appointeeshall neither perform any services for the <strong>University</strong> nor have a reasonableexpectation of compensation for any services that the appointee may render. Anyattempts by any person other than the President (or designee) to effectuate anappointment shall be void.2.1.4 Graduate FacultyMembers of the graduate faculty are actively engaged in research,publication, teaching graduate courses, and guiding research formaster's theses and/or doctoral dissertations. The classification offaculty at the <strong>University</strong> as Assistant Professor, Associate Professor,and Professor, depicts different levels of professional achievement asreflected in their dossiers. Similarly, classification of faculty as tenuretrack, contractual, lecturer and adjunct reflects differences in theiremployment status at the <strong>University</strong>. These classifications also holdimplications for preparation and selection for service as a member ofthe graduate faculty. Thus, the graduate faculty shall include full andassociate memberships.2.1.4.1 Full MembershipIn order to hold full membership in the graduate faculty at <strong>Morgan</strong>, afaculty member must possess the terminal degree in the discipline, or aterminal degree in an appropriately related discipline, in which s/he isteaching in the graduate school. Additionally, full members shall beemployed as tenure track faculty. Full members of the graduate facultyare expected to have distinguished themselves through teaching,research, and publication. Depending upon the discipline, fullmembers may also be distinguished by professional practice or byartistic performance. Full members of the graduate faculty may teachmaster’s and doctoral classes, and direct master's theses and doctoraldissertations.2.1.4.2 Associate MembershipIn order to hold an associate membership in the graduate faculty at<strong>Morgan</strong>, a faculty member is expected to possess the terminal degree
