Employees are able to contribute to a Health CareSpending Account or Dependent Care Spending accounts. These accounts allowemployees to use pre-tax dollars to pay for medical expenses and dependent careexpenses that are incurred during the current year. Additional informationregarding tax deferment options is available in the Office of Human Resources.2.21.7 Voluntary DeductionsFaculty members may purchase U.S. Savings Bonds, contribute to United Way,join and make deposits to the credit union, pay health insurance premiums, andparticipate in a tax-deferred savings plan through automatic deductions from theirpay.2.21.8 Life InsuranceMembers of the Maryland <strong>State</strong> Retirement and Pension Systems have a deathbenefit after one year of service which entitles a beneficiary to one year ofemployee’s salary if the employee dies while in active service. The <strong>State</strong> offerstwo additional life insurance programs: Standard Term Life Insurance andMetropolitan Life Accidental Death and Dismemberment Plan.2.21.9 Direct DepositDirect deposit is available to any bank.2.21.10 Credit UnionPermanent full-time or part-time faculty members are eligible to join the <strong>State</strong>Employees Credit Union. Employee payroll checks can be automaticallydeposited to the SECU accounts. The credit union offers a variety of financialservices to <strong>State</strong> employees, including: checking accounts, IRA’s, various loans,money market certificates, traveler’s checks, no fee VISA cards and an automaticteller machine card access. Applications and brochures are available in theOffice of Human Resources.2.22 Summer ContractsFaculty members on 9½- month contracts can earn up to 26.3% of their regularuniversity salary teaching during the 2½- month summer period and facultymembers on 10- month contracts can earn 22% of the regular <strong>University</strong> salaryteaching during the two month summer period.For additional details, see Appendix page 138 Procedures for Payment ofSummer Contracts for Faculty.
