PAGE 50 * <strong>Morgan</strong> <strong>State</strong> <strong>University</strong> Faculty Handbook2.20.3 Leave of Absence Without PayA leave of absence without pay or for purposes of study, serving as an exchangefaculty member, or for other purposes, may be granted to a faculty member whohas been on active, full-time service with the <strong>University</strong> for a period of at leastthree years. The President may modify the three-year requirement in unusualcircumstances. (Approved by the Board of Regents March 25, 1981)2.20.3.1 Request for Leave Without PayThe faculty member applying for a leave of absence without pay shallsubmit at least six months prior to the start of the proposed leave period aformal written request setting forth clearly the reasons for the proposedabsence. The request should receive the appropriate approvals beforebeing forwarded to the President of the <strong>University</strong>.2.20.3.2 Board InformationThe written request for leave without pay, if approved by the President of the<strong>University</strong>, shall then be forwarded to the Board for information together with anendorsement to the effect that the services of the faculty member can be sparedduring the leave period.2.20.3.3 DurationLeaves of absence without pay generally shall not exceed a period of one year.In special circumstances, with the approval of the President, this leave of absencemay be extended an additional year.2.20.3.4 Retirement ImpactThe Maryland <strong>State</strong> Retirement System provides that a faculty member on leaveof absence without pay loses his year of service to the <strong>State</strong>, except for a facultymember on leave without pay for purposes of military service if he/she does notmeet the established guidelines for a qualifying leave of absence including activemilitary service. The faculty member on leave of absence without pay, in ordernot to lose his year of service to the <strong>State</strong>, may pay directly to the RetirementSystem, in a lump sum, the retirement contribution, with interest, upon his returnfrom leave. An approved leave of absence form must be submitted to theretirement system prior to the commencement of leave in order to receiveretirement credit.2.20.3.5 Not Counted Toward Tenure and Merit Increases
