PAGE 28 * Morgan State University Faculty Handbook2.0 FACULTY PERSONNEL POLICIES2.1 Faculty RankThe Morgan State University Policies and Procedures on Appointment,Promotion and Tenure set forth the criteria for faculty ranks at the University.All faculty appointments are subject to the approval of the President of theUniversity. See Appendix page 75. Approved by the Board of Regents4/13/20042.1.1 Tenure –Track Faculty RankThere are three tenure-track faculty ranks: Assistant Professor, AssociateProfessor and Professor.2.1.2 Non-Tenure Track Faculty RankFollowing are the non tenure track faculty ranks:2.1.2.1 Instructor: Person holding at least the master’s degree from anaccredited institution in the discipline in which he or she teaches.2.1.2.2 Lecturer:A. Minimum Qualifications - The qualifications for appointment to the nontenure-trackrank of Lecturer shall vary according to the nature of the instructionprovided. The advertisements for the position shall set forth the minimumqualifications for the position and the salary established shall be commensuratewith the candidate’s experience and qualifications.B. Duration of Appointment - Appointments to the rank of Lecturer shall be fora term of 10 months and terminates without notice automatically at the end of thecontract period.2.1.2.3 Faculty with Duties Primarily in Research and ScholarshipAll appointments in the following titles are renewable. Appointments donot carry tenure.2.1.2.3.1 Research AssociateThe appointee shall be trained in research procedures, shall becapable of carrying out individual research or collaborating ingroup research at the advanced level, and shall have had theexperience and specialized training necessary for success insuch research projects as may be undertaken. An earneddoctorate shall normally be a minimum requirement.
PAGE 29 * Morgan State University Faculty Handbook2.1.2.3.2 Research Assistant Professor; Assistant ResearchScientist; Assistant Research Scholar; Assistant ResearchEngineer:These ranks are generally parallel to Assistant Professor. Inaddition to the qualifications of a Research Associate,appointees to these ranks shall have a demonstrated superiorresearch ability. Appointees should be qualified andcompetent to direct the work of others (such as technicians,graduate students, other senior research personnel). Thedoctoral degree will be a normal requirement for appointmentat these ranks. Appointment to these ranks may be made for aperiod of up to three years.2.1.2.3.3 Research Associate Professor; AssociateResearch Scientist; Associate Research Scholar;Associate Research Engineer:These ranks are generally parallel to AssociateProfessor. In addition to the qualifications required ofthe assistant ranks, appointees to these ranks should haveextensive successful experience in scholarly or creativeendeavors, and the ability to propose, develop, andmanage major research projects. Appointment to theseranks may be made for a period of up to three years.2.1.2.3.4 Research Professor, Senior ResearchScientistOther distinguished and creative activity. Appointmentto these ranks may be made for a period of up to fiveyears.2.1.2.3.5 Assistant Artist-in-Residence; AssociateArtist-in Residence; Senior Artist-in-ResidenceThese titles, parallel to Assistant Professor, AssociateProfessor, and Professor, respectively, are intended forthose persons whose professional activities are of acreative or performance nature, including but not limitedto theatre, dance, music, and art. In each case, thequalifications shall reflect demonstratedsuperior proficiency and excellence and progressivelyhigher national and international reputation, asappropriate to the ranks involved. Appointment to therank of Senior Artist-in-Residence may be made for aperiod of up to five years, appointment to the ranks ofAssistant Artist-in-Residence and Associate Artist-in-Residence may be made for a period of up to three years.
