PAGE 52 * <strong>Morgan</strong> <strong>State</strong> <strong>University</strong> Faculty HandbookPursuant to the Tuition Waiver Policy, permanent/regular employees, full-timemilitary employees of the ROTC program and Retirees of the <strong>University</strong> andmembers of the Board of Regents may be able to take classes at the <strong>University</strong>free of tuition costs. <strong>Morgan</strong> <strong>State</strong> <strong>University</strong> has a reciprocal agreement withseveral <strong>State</strong> colleges and universities which may enable employees and theirdependents to attend classes at the other <strong>State</strong> institutions without paying tuition.Fees and other appropriate costs are required.See Appendix page 117 for the Tuition Waiver Policy Effective, May 14, 2002.Amendments approved by the Board of Regents on April 12, 2004, January 10,2006 and August 21, 2007.2.21.3 Group HealthFaculty members may join one of several group health plans offered by the <strong>State</strong>of Maryland through the <strong>University</strong>. Choices include the Preferred ProviderNetwork and several Health Maintenance Organizations (HMO). Additionally, aVision Plan, Prescription Plan, Catastrophic Illness Plan, Dental Plan and Long-Term Care Plans are available. The premium cost varies, depending on the planselected. In general, the <strong>University</strong> pays 85% of the premium cost, although thispercentage may vary slightly from plan to plan. Employees have the option ofjoining a health plan within sixty (60) days of employment date. Otherwise, theymay not join a group health plan until the Open Enrollment Period which usuallyis held in the Fall of each year.2.21.4 Retirement Plans<strong>State</strong> law mandates that employees become a member of a retirement system. Inthis regard, faculty members have the option of joining one of two systems.They may join an Optional Retirement Plan or the Maryland <strong>State</strong> TeachersPension System (TPS). For more information regarding the retirement plansavailable to <strong>University</strong> employees, please contact the Office of HumanResources.2.21.5 Summer School Teaching and Minimester TeachingSummer School salaries are not paid on a bi-weekly basis. There are generallytwo lump sum payments for the courses taught. Summer school salary is subjectto state and federal taxes and Social Security taxes. Retirement credit is notreceived for summer school teaching. Minimester salaries are paid in one lumpsum.2.21.6 Tax Deferment OpportunitiesThere are several tax-deferred plans offered through the <strong>University</strong>’s payrollsystem. For example, the TIAA-CREF Retirement System, PEBSCO plan andthe TIAA-CREF Supplemental Retirement Annuities Plan (SRA) offer tax
