PAGE 51 * <strong>Morgan</strong> <strong>State</strong> <strong>University</strong> Faculty HandbookThe time for which a faculty member has received approved leave without payshall not be credited toward tenure or merit increases.2.20.4 Bereavement LeaveWith the approval of the appointing authority, an employee may take up to five(5) days leave which is charged against sick leave for the death of an immediatefamily member. Leave is granted based on the following: A maximum of five(5) working days, depending on need, may be charged to sick leave in the eventof death of one of the following members of the family: spouse, children, parentsof employee or spouse or others who took the place of parents, brothers andsisters of employee or spouse, and other relatives living as members of theemployee’s household. If travel requiring staying away from home overnight isinvolved, a maximum of 5 days may be charged to sick leave. One working daymay be charged to sick leave for the death of other relatives of an employee’sextended family. Human Resources should be consulted regarding one daybereavement leave provisions.2.20.5 Other Types of LeaveThe <strong>University</strong> recognizes other types of leave such as military and special leavesgranted under the provisions of the Higher Education Acts. Such leaves may begranted with the approval of the President.2.20.6 Accident LeaveAccident Leave is leave with pay that is granted to an employee who, in theactual performance of his job duties, sustains an injury which is determined to becompensable according to the Maryland Worker’s Compensation Law. Theinjured employee or someone on the employee’s behalf shall provide to theappointing authority within three (3) working days after the injury occurs, aphysician’s written certification that the employee is disabled by the injury.The accident leave ends when a physician certifies, in writing, that the employeeis able to return to work. The appointing authority shall assure that accidentleave does not extend beyond 6 months without continuous certification from anattending physician not to exceed a year from the date of the injury. Accidentleave is paid at the rate of 2/3 of the employee’s salary rate.2.21 Employee Benefits and Services2.21.1 Social SecurityEmployees pay Social Security taxes in accordance with federal law andregulations. The <strong>University</strong> matches the contribution.2.21.2 Tuition Waiver Policy
