PAGE 30 * Morgan State University Faculty Handbook2.1.3 Special Positions2.1.3.1 Visiting AppointmentsVisiting - The prefix "Visiting" before an academic title (e.g., "VisitingProfessor") shall indicate a special appointment without eligibility for promotionand/tenure. An appointee given this rank is usually associated with another academicinstitution or other employer. The rank accorded to a "Visiting" appointee shall begranted based on the same criteria required for the University’s regular and full-timeappointees holding the ranks of Assistant Professor, Associate Professor andProfessor. An appointment to the rank of “Visiting” Professor, Associate Professor, orAssistant Professor shall have no effect until such time as a fully executedemployment contract is executed by the President (or the President’s designee) andthe appointee. Prior to the existence of a fully executed employment contract betweenthe parties, no employment relationship exists between the parties, and the appointeeshall neither perform any services for the University nor have a reasonableexpectation of compensation for any services that the appointee may render. Anyattempts by any person other than the President (or designee) to effectuate anappointment shall be void.2.1.4 Graduate FacultyMembers of the graduate faculty are actively engaged in research,publication, teaching graduate courses, and guiding research formaster's theses and/or doctoral dissertations. The classification offaculty at the University as Assistant Professor, Associate Professor,and Professor, depicts different levels of professional achievement asreflected in their dossiers. Similarly, classification of faculty as tenuretrack, contractual, lecturer and adjunct reflects differences in theiremployment status at the University. These classifications also holdimplications for preparation and selection for service as a member ofthe graduate faculty. Thus, the graduate faculty shall include full andassociate memberships.2.1.4.1 Full MembershipIn order to hold full membership in the graduate faculty at Morgan, afaculty member must possess the terminal degree in the discipline, or aterminal degree in an appropriately related discipline, in which s/he isteaching in the graduate school. Additionally, full members shall beemployed as tenure track faculty. Full members of the graduate facultyare expected to have distinguished themselves through teaching,research, and publication. Depending upon the discipline, fullmembers may also be distinguished by professional practice or byartistic performance. Full members of the graduate faculty may teachmaster’s and doctoral classes, and direct master's theses and doctoraldissertations.2.1.4.2 Associate MembershipIn order to hold an associate membership in the graduate faculty atMorgan, a faculty member is expected to possess the terminal degree
PAGE 31 * Morgan State University Faculty Handbookin the discipline, or a terminal degree in an appropriately relateddiscipline, in which s/he is teaching in the graduate school.Additionally, associate members of the graduate faculty may possessan adjunct, lecturer or contractual (i.e., fixed term) position. Associatemembers of the graduate faculty must, however, hold academiccredentials sufficient to support an appointment at the University atthe rank of Assistant Professor or higher. Associate members of thegraduate faculty are expected to possess a documented2.1.4.3 Rights and Responsibilities of Graduate Faculty. Fullmembership entitles graduate faculty to all the rights andresponsibilities specified in (a) through (e) below. Associate membershave the rights and responsibilities in (a), (b), and (c), but not (d) and(e) below.a. Teach graduate level courses.b. Serve on graduate students' committees.c. Chair master's committees and/or master's thesis research.d. Chair doctoral committees and/or doctoral dissertation research.e. Vote on matters submitted to the graduate faculty2.1.4.4 Procedures for Appointment to the Graduate Faculty2.1.4.5 Full Membership.Faculty who meet the criteria are granted full membership in thegraduate faculty by the Dean of the School of Graduate Studies uponthe recommendation of the College/School Dean with the concurrenceof the Department Chairperson. The College/School Dean shall submitthe form, "Nomination for Full Membership," to the Dean of theSchool of Graduate Studies for faculty members who are nominatedand who meet the criteria for membership. The Dean of the School ofGraduate Studies shall review the nomination and, if the criteria aremet, sign and return a copy of the nomination form to theCollege/School Dean. If it is found that the criteria are not met, theDean of the School of Graduate Studies reserves the right to deny theappointment of a nominee to the Graduate Faculty.2.1.4.6 Associate Membership.Associate members of the Graduate Faculty must be recommended bythe Chairperson of the graduate program where the faculty memberteaches and/or chairs committees or directs the thesis research ofstudents pursuing master's degrees. In addition to completing the form,"Recommendation for Associate Membership," the Chairperson isresponsible for submitting documentation to support the facultymember's ability and experience in graduate teaching, research andsupervising graduate students. The form and the supportingdocumentation are then submitted to the College/School Dean forreview. If the recommendation of the Chairperson is approved, theCollege/School Dean shall submit the form, "Recommendation for
