expressed concern was now to establish her own service agency. Her ties to the community,which were <strong>in</strong>itially stronger with the Two Six youth and families, began to weaken. A group ofTwo Six youth accused her of “ratt<strong>in</strong>g” to the police. In addition, tension between <strong>Project</strong> policeand M. L. G. <strong>in</strong>creased. <strong>The</strong> <strong>Project</strong> police were <strong>in</strong>creas<strong>in</strong>gly distrustful of some of M. L. G.’sefforts to organize the community aga<strong>in</strong>st the police. She had charged that the local police werefalsely accus<strong>in</strong>g a (non-<strong>Project</strong>) gang youth of a shoot<strong>in</strong>g.M. L. G. suddenly disappeared from the scene. She was more <strong>in</strong>volved <strong>in</strong> gang-relatedand youth-development meet<strong>in</strong>gs across a variety of citywide social agencies and churches. Shedeveloped close relationships with a YMCA program <strong>in</strong>terested <strong>in</strong> gang outreach recreationalwork on the north side of the city. She was also work<strong>in</strong>g part-time <strong>in</strong> a program at the JuvenileDetention Center of the Cook County Juvenile Court.Nevertheless, she was still <strong>in</strong>volved <strong>in</strong> the development of NAGV-sponsored residentmeet<strong>in</strong>gs <strong>in</strong> <strong>Little</strong> <strong>Village</strong> <strong>in</strong> late 1995. Two community meet<strong>in</strong>gs were held. At the firstmeet<strong>in</strong>g, specific plans for <strong>in</strong>volv<strong>in</strong>g youth from the Two Six and the Lat<strong>in</strong> K<strong>in</strong>gs as well ascommunity residents, church representatives and GVRP, were developed. <strong>The</strong> second meet<strong>in</strong>g<strong>in</strong> December at La Villita Community Church (organized ma<strong>in</strong>ly by the priests from EpiphanyChurch, M.L.G. and GVRP staff) <strong>in</strong>volved four local social agencies, ten local residents and n<strong>in</strong>emembers of the Lat<strong>in</strong> K<strong>in</strong>gs and Two Six. Also attend<strong>in</strong>g were two of the <strong>Project</strong> probationofficers; the two <strong>Project</strong> tactical officers were stationed outside the church to prevent and controlany gang activity that might result.<strong>The</strong> discussion at this meet<strong>in</strong>g, which lasted about one and a half hours, was ma<strong>in</strong>lyabout the needs of gang youth for education, tra<strong>in</strong><strong>in</strong>g, and jobs, and also the reduction of gang7.28
