190 WATER TREATMENTin particular trihalomethanes, from water. The equilibrium isotherm for theadsorption of CHCl 3 onto silicalite is comparable with adsorption onto GAC, withthe considerable advantage for silicalite of simple regeneration by heating in air.Equilibrium data can be described over a broad range of THM concentrations bythe Freundlich isotherm. The constants in the isotherm are comparable with thosefor GAC.Rates of adsorption of chloroform from water by silicalite are comparable with thoseof GAC.ACKNOWLEDGEMENTSThis project is sponsored by the UK Science and Engineering Research Councilunder its Separation Processes Initiative and has the supporting interest of theWater Research Centre, Stevenage. Also, the supply of Filtrasorb-400 activatedcarbon by Chemviron Carbon is gratefully acknowledged. The authors are alsoparticularly grateful to the staff of Wessex Water for their helpful advice inestablishing the analytical procedure used in this research programme.REFERENCESFaust, S D and Aly, O M (1987), Adsorption Processes for Water Treatment,Butterworths, BostonFlanigen, E M and Grose, R W (1977), US Patent 4,061, 724, December 6 1977Lange, N A (ed) (1985), Lange’s Handbook of Chemistry, 13th Edn, McGraw-Hill,New YorkO’Brien, R P, Rizzo, J L, Schuliger, W G (1983), Removal of Organic Compoundsfrom Industrial Wastewaters Using Granular Carbon Column Processes, in B BBerger (ed) Control of Organic Substances in Water and Wastewater, EPA-600/8–83–011, pp337–362Ram, N M, Calabrese, E J, Christman, R F (1986), Organic Carcinogens in DrinkingWater, Wiley, New York, p4Rook, J J (1974), Water Treat Exam, 23, 234Schultz-Sibbel, G M W, Gjerde, D T, Chriswell, C D and Fritz, J S (1982), Talanta,29, 447–452
