Chapter 7EXPERT SYSTEMS FOR THEEXPLOITATION OF A PURIFICATIONSTATION: ORAGE (COMPUTER AIDFOR THE MANAGEMENT OFPURIFICATION)M Mansat (Greater Lyon Council, Lyon, France)Purification Station of MEYZIEU belong<strong>in</strong>g tothe LYON Metropolitan AuthorityS<strong>in</strong>ce its creation <strong>in</strong> 1969, the Sanitation Department of the Lyon MetropolitanAuthority (COURLY) ma<strong>in</strong>ta<strong>in</strong>s preferential deel<strong>in</strong>gs with OTV Company (Omniumof <strong>Treatment</strong> <strong>and</strong> Valorization), a branch of the General Company of <strong>Water</strong> (C.G.E).This Company has <strong>in</strong>deed co-operated <strong>in</strong> the build<strong>in</strong>g of two important purificationstations of Courly:– ST FONS on the left bank of the Rhône river (700 000 Eq/<strong>in</strong>hab.)– PIERRE-BENITE on the right bank of the Rhône (475 000 Eq/<strong>in</strong>hab.).OTV is also runn<strong>in</strong>g, on behalf of the Sanitation Department <strong>and</strong> together with BTACompany, the purification Station of ST FONS.Moreover, <strong>in</strong> 1988, OTV had been choosen as the pilot of a group <strong>in</strong>clud<strong>in</strong>g CGEEfor Electricity <strong>and</strong> MAIA-SONNIER for civil eng<strong>in</strong>eer<strong>in</strong>g <strong>and</strong> <strong>in</strong> charge of the build<strong>in</strong>gof a new purification Station <strong>in</strong> MEYZIEU.The fill<strong>in</strong>g of this station (capacity of 35 000 Eq/<strong>in</strong>hab. with a possibility of extentionto 50 000 Eq/<strong>in</strong>hab.) has been done by the end of 1989.This plant, modernly conceived <strong>and</strong> highly automated, has:• a classical pre-treatment,• a primary treatment made up of 2 lamellar decant<strong>in</strong>g mach<strong>in</strong>es,• a biological treatment with 4 underwater bacterial filters made by OTV<strong>and</strong> called BIOCARBONE.The mud treatment is done via a thicken<strong>in</strong>g mach<strong>in</strong>e <strong>and</strong> 2 strip-filters aim<strong>in</strong>g atdesiccat<strong>in</strong>g muds before their dispatch<strong>in</strong>g to the purification station <strong>in</strong> PIERRE-BENITE where they will be burnt.Moreover, the Sanitation Department, aim<strong>in</strong>g at a strict management, tries to f<strong>in</strong>dmeans of curb<strong>in</strong>g expenses at best <strong>and</strong> <strong>in</strong> particular its development problems.So it was a good opportunity for <strong>in</strong>novat<strong>in</strong>g <strong>in</strong> the field of purification stationsdevelopment, by putt<strong>in</strong>g together all skills of both OTV <strong>and</strong> COURLY’S Sanitation©1991 Elsevier Science Publishers Ltd, Engl<strong>and</strong><strong>Water</strong> <strong>Treatment</strong>—Proceed<strong>in</strong>gs of the 1 st International Conference, pp. 61–6661
