STUDY OF POLLUTION CONTROL AT A STORMWATER OVERFLOW 265could be the existence of a disused rubbish tip (now a recreation ground)situated alongside the stream. This site is also a popular place for dogs.When operating, the SKO discharges a large number of bacteria (typically3×1C coliforms/l00ml) to the stream. But, spill events are intermittent and,from the bacteria levels recorded at the Bancroft Road site, (typically 6×103coliforms/l00ml) coincide with 5 or more dilutions in the stream. Of interest,though, is the fact that the Egerton Park Stream flows out onto a designatedbathing beach, see Fig 2. So, in this respect, bacteria counts are important.But, despite the fact that bacteria counts can be difficult to interpret andare highly variable, Bexhill’s beach has passed the EC Bathing Waterstandards. Also, the bacteriological analysis supports the evidence fromthe chemical analysis that the effects of the spill events are transient andthat the stream is quick to recover. 266 WATER TREATMENT8.5 RainfallRainfall has been measured since the commencement of the study anddata are presented in Fig. 9. The rainfall which occurred 3 days before aroutine sample and a spill event is shown. Total monthly rainfall is notshown.
