Handle Source Files interacts with Handle Subjects (see Table 5-1 for a summary of the interactions). Subjects Table 5-1. Interactions between Handle Source Files and Handle Subjects Separately Together 2. Handle Subjects. Specifies whether to combine subjects into a multisubject grand average. • Separately: for each category, creates a separate ERP for each subject (an average for each subject). • Together: for each category, creates a single ERP for all subjects (a multisubject grand average). • Get Subject ID from File Name: uses the file name to rename the subject ID. An example of when this is useful is if a file has no subject ID assigned. Handle Subjects interacts with Handle Source Files (see Table 5-1 for a summary of the interactions). 3. Handle Events buttons. Specifies whether to copy events from the first segment to the average segment. • Do Not Copy Events (Faster): does not copy events to the average segment. • Copy Events From First File (Slower): for each category, copies all events from the first segment in that category to the average segment. 4. Compute Noise Estimate checkbox: when checked, this calculates the amount of noise on the waveform. The Averaging tool does this by multiplying every other segment by –1, to subtract the ERP data from the noise. You can view the result by opening the resulting averaged file, choosing View > as Categories, displaying the Navigation control strip, and choosing “Noise Est_” from the segment selector in the control strip. (The new categories are labeled “Noise Est_” plus the original category name.)
