Peugeot Turkey’s brand new Director General Laurent Pernet told us the impacts<br />
of low energy prices on the automotive sector, presented his thoughts<br />
and projections in this regard.<br />

buldunuz. Şimdi de otomotiv sektörüne<br />
dönüş yaparak Türkiye’ye geldiniz.<br />
Avrupa’dan yeni gelmiş bir yönetici<br />
olarak Avrupa ekonomisini nasıl görüyorsunuz?<br />
Avrupa ekonomisi karışık bir dönemden<br />
geçiyor. Ben özellikle Fransız ekonomisini<br />
daha iyi biliyorum. Ekonomi<br />
üzerine genel etkileri olan işsizlik,<br />
sosyal kriz gibi bazı temel veriler son<br />
günlerde biraz karışık. Fransa’da<br />
şu sıralar gündemde olan bir diğer<br />
gelişme de şirketlerin maruz kaldığı<br />
sosyal kesintiler. Bunlar şirketlerin<br />
ekonomik olarak açılım yapmalarının<br />
önündeki frenler.<br />

After your many years of experience in<br />
the automotive sector, you suddenly became<br />
the coach of a football club. Now,<br />
you took a sharp turn to the automotive<br />
sector and came to Turkey. As a ‘just arrived’<br />
manager from Europe, how do you<br />
evaluate the European economy?<br />
European economy is going through a tough<br />
period. I especially have a grasp of French<br />
economy. Some fundamental factors such<br />
as employment and social crisis, which have<br />
an influence on the overall economy, are a<br />
little complicated these days. Another item<br />
in France’s agenda is the social withholding<br />
upon companies. These cuts hinder the economic<br />
growth of companies.<br />
What was the impact of the sharp decline<br />
in oil prices on the automotive sector?<br />
Decline in oil prices is relatively a new development.<br />
This is particularly rooted in the decrease<br />
of production in China, Russia, Brazil,<br />
etc. These countries demand less energy but<br />
supply is still considerable. Therefore, pump<br />
prices for end users have a significant downtrend.<br />
Naturally, road transport will gain its<br />
former popularity over rail transport. I recently<br />
read an interesting study. According to<br />
this study, French people drive more during<br />
holidays as oil prices decline. Diesel has declined<br />
from 1.40-1.50 Euros to 1.10 Euros per<br />
liter. Thus, driving has become a more favorable<br />
alternative than train and airplane.<br />
How long will it continue like this? Is this a<br />
temporary condition resulting from dimin-<br />
