arms of atmosphere; that Unity, that Over-soul, within which every<br />

man’s particular being is contained and made one with all other.”<br />

“In nature every moment is new; the past is always swallowed and<br />

forgotten; the coming only is sacred. Nothing is secure but life,<br />

transition, the energizing spirit.… No truth [is] so sublime but it may<br />

be trivial to-morrow in the light of new thoughts.” (“Circles”)<br />

Each human being was an organic part of this ongoing, evolving unity,<br />

and yet suffered when feeling divided from it. This sense of division was<br />

endemic because each person also felt divided within him or herself. The<br />

basic cure—which, Emerson agreed with the Romantics, is available to all—<br />

was to regain a sense of the pre-existing unity through a direct intuition of<br />

its presence.<br />

intersection is there anywhere in nature, but one blood rolls<br />

uninterruptedly in an endless circulation through all men, as the<br />

water of the globe is all one sea, and, truly seen, its tide is one.” (“The<br />

“The reason why the world lacks unity is because man is disunited<br />

with himself.… We live in succession, in division, in parts, in<br />

particles. Meanwhile, within man is the soul of the whole, the wise<br />

silence, the universal beauty, to which every part and particle is<br />

equally related, the eternal One. And this deep power in which we<br />

exist, and whose beatitude is all accessible to us, is not only selfsufficing<br />

and perfect in every hour, but the act of seeing and the thing<br />

seen, the seer and the spectacle, the subject and the object, are one.”<br />

In describing this unity both as a pre-existing characteristic of the infinite<br />

universe and as a direct experience, Emerson placed more emphasis on its<br />

mental aspect, and less on the physical aspect, than the Romantics had.<br />

Individual minds were part of a unified universal mind. This shift in<br />

emphasis meant that he gave little importance to physical drives, and total<br />

importance to the messages the mind received as a result of the experience.<br />

Emerson called these messages “laws,” which signals another shift of<br />
