c<strong>on</strong>servati<strong>on</strong>.was.even.known.(Joule.1843).and.l<strong>on</strong>g.before.Thermodynamic.<br />
c<strong>on</strong>cepts. were. established. in. 1850s..A. century. later,.<br />
Bridgman.(1941).“complained”.that.“there are almost as many formulati<strong>on</strong>s<br />
<strong>of</strong> the Sec<strong>on</strong>d Law as there have been discussi<strong>on</strong> <strong>of</strong> it.”.<br />
Even.today,.the.Sec<strong>on</strong>d Law.remains.so.obscure,.due.to.the.lack.<strong>of</strong>.<br />
its.comprehensi<strong>on</strong>,.that.it.c<strong>on</strong>tinues.to.attract.new.efforts.at.clarificati<strong>on</strong>,.including.this.<strong>on</strong>e.<br />
The. Laws <strong>of</strong> Thermodynamics. have. much. wider,. including.<br />
philosophical.significance.and.implicati<strong>on</strong>,.than.their.simple.expressi<strong>on</strong>s.<br />
based. <strong>on</strong>. the. experimental. observati<strong>on</strong>s.. The. Fundamental<br />
Laws <strong>of</strong> Nature:.The.Zeroth (equilibrium.existentialism),.The.First.<br />
(c<strong>on</strong>servati<strong>on</strong>ism), The. Sec<strong>on</strong>d. (directi<strong>on</strong>al. transformati<strong>on</strong>alism),<br />
and The.Third.(unattainability.<strong>of</strong>.emptiness),.are.defining.and.unifying.<br />

remains.and.a.trove.<strong>of</strong>.data.<strong>on</strong>.mortuary.practice..The.Tiwanaku.<br />
rituals.<strong>of</strong>.death.and.mourning.indicate.enduring.cultural.and.social.<br />
ties.between.lowland.col<strong>on</strong>ies.and.the.civilizati<strong>on</strong>’s.homeland.in.<br />
the.high.altiplano..Shared.mortuary.elements.include.widely.shared.<br />
practices. <strong>of</strong>. body. preparati<strong>on</strong>,. wrapping. and. positi<strong>on</strong>ing,. tomb.<br />
c<strong>on</strong>structi<strong>on</strong>,.and.burial.<strong>of</strong>ferings..At.the.same.time,.more.subtle.<br />

we.rec<strong>on</strong>struct.the.paleodiet.<strong>of</strong>.the.Middle-Horiz<strong>on</strong>.Tiwanaku.from.<br />
Rio. Muerto. in. the. Moquegua. Valley. <strong>of</strong>. Southern. Peru.. Working.<br />
with.mummified.remains.permits.analysis.<strong>of</strong>.both.traditi<strong>on</strong>al.b<strong>on</strong>e.<br />
isotope.ratios.as.well.as.human.hair,.allowing.comparis<strong>on</strong>.between.<br />
l<strong>on</strong>g.and.short-term.dietary.intake..Our.results.are.compared.to.previously.<br />
generated. data. from. the. earlier. Huaracane,. and. succeeding.Tumilaca.and.Chiribaya.populati<strong>on</strong>s,.and.to.highland.Tiwanaku.<br />

idea,.overshadowing.the.actual.individuals.involved.in.activity.and.<br />
producti<strong>on</strong>.within.an.emerging.complex.society..Within.this.paper,.<br />
I. provide. a. comparative. framework. <strong>of</strong>. specific. skeletal. evidence.<br />
to.the.archaeological.record.by.using.biological.markers.to.infer.<br />
