Dall.Island.in.Southeastern.Alaska..The.remains.<strong>of</strong>.four.individuals.<br />
were.observed,.three.were.skelet<strong>on</strong>ized.and.<strong>on</strong>e.was.well.mummified..Images.from.the.1940.expediti<strong>on</strong>.show.preservati<strong>on</strong>.was.excellent,.due.to.the.individual’s.burial.box.resting.<strong>of</strong>f.<strong>of</strong>.the.ground.<strong>on</strong>.<br />
top.<strong>of</strong>.wooden.poles.and.sheltered.under.a.rock.overhang..Housed.<br />
at.the.Smiths<strong>on</strong>ian.Instituti<strong>on</strong>,.current.observati<strong>on</strong>.presents.an.individual.whose.skin.has.been.removed,.organs.likely.disposed.<strong>of</strong>,.and.<br />
most.<strong>of</strong>.the.skelet<strong>on</strong>.disarticulated..This.research.describes.further.<br />
the.history.<strong>of</strong>.the.find,.the.current.state.<strong>of</strong>.the.remains,.the.health.<br />
<strong>of</strong>.the.individual,.and.comparis<strong>on</strong>s.to.similar.mummified.remains.<br />

The.German.<strong>Mummy</strong>.Project.(GMP).was.created.in.2004.following.the.discovery.<strong>of</strong>.20.mummies.in.storage.at.the.Reiss-Engelhorn.Museums.(rem).in.Mannheim,.Germany..The.purpose.<strong>of</strong>.the.<br />
GMP.is.three-fold:.to.undertake.scientific.analysis.<strong>of</strong>.the.mummies.<br />
<strong>of</strong>.the.rem.and.other.instituti<strong>on</strong>s,.to.disseminate.the.results.<strong>of</strong>.the.<br />
research.in.academic.and.public.fora.and.to.undertake.c<strong>on</strong>servati<strong>on</strong>.<strong>of</strong>.the.mummies.to.ensure.their.preservati<strong>on</strong>.for.the.future..To.<br />
date,.the.German.<strong>Mummy</strong>.Project.has.developed.research.plans.and.<br />
begun.preliminary.research.<strong>on</strong>.more.than.40.human.mummies..The.<br />
research.<strong>of</strong>.the.GMP.emphasizes.the.use.<strong>of</strong>.n<strong>on</strong>-destructive.methods,.with.limited.physical.sampling.<strong>on</strong>ly.permitted.to.answer.specific.research.questi<strong>on</strong>s.that.could.not.be.addressed.through.other.<br />
n<strong>on</strong>-destructive.methods..All.<strong>of</strong>.the.work.<strong>of</strong>.the.GMPis.c<strong>on</strong>ducted.<br />

The. team. <strong>of</strong>. the. German. <strong>Mummy</strong>. Project. has. developed. a. standard.protocol.that.is.applied.to.every.mummy.examined.within.the.<br />
framework.<strong>of</strong>.the.project,.whether.human.or.animal..This.protocol.<br />
includes.the.assignment.<strong>of</strong>.an.individual.identificati<strong>on</strong>.number.used.<br />
for.all.documentati<strong>on</strong>.and.sampling;.the.completi<strong>on</strong>.<strong>of</strong>.an.extensive.documentati<strong>on</strong>.form.and.linking.<strong>of</strong>.the.standard.documentati<strong>on</strong>.<br />
form. to. computer. files,. images,. medical. image. data,. results.<br />
<strong>of</strong>.externally-c<strong>on</strong>ducted.analyses,.and.publicati<strong>on</strong>s.relevant.to.the.<br />

is.still.c<strong>on</strong>sidered.as.diagnostic.gold-standard;.the.excellent.image.<br />
quality.leads.to.higher.diagnostic.c<strong>on</strong>fidence.eg..for.the.identificati<strong>on</strong>.<strong>of</strong>.diseases..However,.numerous.ancient.mummified.remains.<br />
undergo.DNA.analysis.following.such.i<strong>on</strong>izing.radiati<strong>on</strong>.exposures..<br />
In.practice,.the.probability.for.an.ancient.DNA.damage.induced.by.<br />
X-rays.is.completely.unknown.because.no.experimental.data.are.<br />
available,.and.the.published.literature.is.very.limited.in.this.field..<br />
We. present. statistical-based. algorithms. such. as. the. M<strong>on</strong>te. Carlo.<br />
calculati<strong>on</strong>.to.simulate.physics.processes.in.anthropomorphic.phantoms..Using.this.method,.the.probability.<strong>of</strong>.X-ray.induced.ancient.<br />
DNA.degradati<strong>on</strong>.can.be.predicted.eventually..First.results.show,.<br />
e.g.that.the.absorbed.energy.in.cells.depends.<strong>on</strong>.the.cell.distributi<strong>on</strong>.<br />
