The. first. mummified. salt. miner. was. incidentally. unearthed. at. the. salt. mine. near. Hamzehlu,. Iran. during. commercial. mining. activities.in.1993..Systematically.c<strong>on</strong>ducted.excavati<strong>on</strong>s.by.Abulfazi.Aali.(miras farhangi Zanjan,.Iran).led.to.the.salvage.<strong>of</strong>.spectacularly.well.preserved.salt.mummies,.clothing.and.underground. everyday. commodities. in. 2004/05.. The. project. was. relaunched. in. 2010. by. miras farhangi Zanjan,. and. the. Ruhr-<strong>University</strong>. <strong>of</strong>. Bochum.and.the.German.Mining.Museum.Bochum.in.cooperati<strong>on</strong>. with.an.internati<strong>on</strong>al.team..Target-oriented.work.led.to.a.detailed. understanding.<strong>of</strong>.stratigraphic.relati<strong>on</strong>s.between.layers,.finds,.and. formerly.excavated.mummies..As.assumed.before,.the.miners.had. 116 been. killed. during. at. least. two. mine. disasters,. which. happened. between.ca..2500.and.1500.years.ago..The.date.is.supported.by.a. number.<strong>of</strong>. 14 C.dates.taken.from.freshly.excavated.layers..<strong>Mummy</strong>. expert.PD.Dr..Ruehli.was.able.to.take.samples.<strong>of</strong>.b<strong>on</strong>es.and.s<strong>of</strong>t.tissues.from.all.ancient.victims,.which.were.sent.to.several.European. laboratories.for.further.analyses.. High-salt. burial. envir<strong>on</strong>ments. can. lead. to. excepti<strong>on</strong>al. organic. preservati<strong>on</strong>. in. climates. and. geographical. regi<strong>on</strong>s. that. otherwise. rarely.produce.mummified.remains..In.this.study,.we.investigate.tissue. preservati<strong>on</strong>.in.four.naturally.mummified.miners.from.the.Douzlakh. Salt.Mine.in.(Cherābād,.Zanjan.Province)..Radiocarb<strong>on</strong>.dating.<strong>of</strong>.the. bodies.indicates.at.least.two.separate.episodes.<strong>of</strong>.mining.hall.collapse. (1,500.BP.and.2,500.BP),.which.trapped.and.killed.the.miners..Gross. tissue.preservati<strong>on</strong>.<strong>of</strong>.the.miners.was.variable,.ranging.from.complete. s<strong>of</strong>t.tissue.mummificati<strong>on</strong>.to.near.skelet<strong>on</strong>izati<strong>on</strong>..Samples.<strong>of</strong>.hair,. skin,.muscle,.organ,.and.b<strong>on</strong>e.from.four.miners.(mummies.2,.3,.5,. and. 6). were. further. analyzed. for. cellular. and. genetic. preservati<strong>on</strong>.. S<strong>of</strong>t.tissue.histological.secti<strong>on</strong>s.were.stained.with.standard.and.special.histological.staining.methods,.including.H.and.E,.Goldner.Trichrome,.Sudan.Red,.Berlin.Blue,.and.Gram,.and.b<strong>on</strong>e.and.hair.samples.were.investigated.for.mitoch<strong>on</strong>drial.and.nuclear.genetic.markers.using.PCR..Preliminary.results.indicate.both.the.preservati<strong>on</strong>.<strong>of</strong>. microscopic.tissue.structures.such.as.hair.follicles,.adipose.tissue,.and. muscle.fibers,.as.well.as.sub-cellular.structures,.including.intact.cell. nuclei..Plant.material.was.recovered.from.digestive.organs,.and.compact.plant.fibers.from.a.textile.were.also.identified..Genetic.analysis. c<strong>on</strong>firms. the. presence. <strong>of</strong>. preserved. high. quality. ancient. DNA,. and. mitoch<strong>on</strong>drial. ancestry. informative. markers. RÜHLI*.(Centre.for.Evoluti<strong>on</strong>ary.Medicine,.Institute.<strong>of</strong>.Anatomy,.<strong>University</strong>.<strong>of</strong>.Zürich,.Switzerland;.karl.link@anatom.uzh.ch).Lyuba.was.found.frozen.in.the.permafrost.<strong>of</strong>.the.Siberian.tundra.<strong>on</strong>.the.Yuribey.River.in.2007..She.is.the.best-preserved.mammoth.discovered.to.date..As.part.<strong>of</strong>.the.examinati<strong>on</strong>.<strong>of</strong>.Lyuba,.tissue.samples.<strong>of</strong>.hair,.muscle,.and.internal.organs.were.taken.by.endoscopy..The.secti<strong>on</strong>ed.biopsies.were.stained.with.standard.and.special. histological.stains..In.general,.the.microscopic.preservati<strong>on</strong>.<strong>of</strong>.the. tissue.was.not.as.good.as.the.overall.macroscopic.preservati<strong>on</strong>,.and. no.clearly.identifiable.cell.nuclei.were.found.in.the.secti<strong>on</strong>s..The. best-preserved. structures. were. collagen. fibers,. which. gave. some. structural.semblance.to.the.organs..In.the.hairs,.evidence.<strong>of</strong>.pigmentati<strong>on</strong>,.a.scaly.surface,.diag<strong>on</strong>al.intra-hair.structures,.and.a.medulla.
were.seen..Fat.droplets.could.be.identified.in.the.subcutaneous.fat. sample.and.several.organs..Bacteria.were.seen.<strong>on</strong>.the.lumen.side. <strong>of</strong>.the.small.intestine.and.cecum,.and.in.the.liver.and.lung.tissue.. In.additi<strong>on</strong>,.fungi.and.pollen.were.found.in.the.lung.sample..In.the. wall.<strong>of</strong>.the.cecum.and.small.intestine.it.was.possible.to.dem<strong>on</strong>strate. blood.vessels.and.nerves..Ir<strong>on</strong>.was.identified.in.the.vivianite.sample..The.histological.finds.support.the.theory.that.Lyuba.drowned. in.muddy.water..The.microscopic.tissue.preservati<strong>on</strong>.indicates.that.
