between.an.isolated.guitar.top’s.t<strong>on</strong>e.properties.and.the.sound.quality.<strong>of</strong>.the.finished.guitar..Future.work.will.develop.the.reliability.<br />

Two.field.sampling.labs.will.be.presented..An.air.m<strong>on</strong>itoring.<br />

lab.is.somewhat.low.tech.and.it.utilizes.gas.diffusi<strong>on</strong>.tubes..The.<br />

soils.analysis.is.somewhat.high.tech.and.uses.a.field-portable.XRF.<br />

valid,.reliable,.FREE,.<strong>on</strong>line.instrument.developed.by.the.Nati<strong>on</strong>al.<br />

Science. Foundati<strong>on</strong>. to. improve. teaching. by. providing. coursespecific,.formative.feedback.<strong>on</strong>.students’.learning.gains.and.<strong>on</strong>.the.<br />

pedagogy.resp<strong>on</strong>sible.for.those.gains..The.SALG.drives.learning.by.<br />

promoting.alignment.<strong>of</strong>.objectives.and.pedagogy.and.by.stimulating.metacogniti<strong>on</strong>..A.SALG.for.departments.collects.and.analyzes.data.about.department.learning.goals.while.preserving.faculty’s.privacy.and.ability.to.adapt.the.instruments.to.their.own.classes.<br />

McKeachie.and.Seldin.(POD,.2006).reported.that.over.85%.<strong>of</strong>.<br />

American.universities.and.colleges.use.standardized.student.course.<br />

evaluati<strong>on</strong>s.(SCEs).as.the.primary.means.<strong>of</strong>.evaluati<strong>on</strong>.<strong>of</strong>.faculty..<br />

Yet.as.Seymour.(and.others).found,.traditi<strong>on</strong>al.student.course.evaluati<strong>on</strong>.instruments.are.inaccurate.as.indicators.<strong>of</strong>.students’.learning.gains.and.ineffective.in.soliciting.useful.feedback..(Seymour,.<br />

Now.there.is.an.alternative:.the.SALG..This.free,.<strong>on</strong>line.course.<br />

evaluati<strong>on</strong>.system.focuses.not.<strong>on</strong>.teacher.behaviors,.but.<strong>on</strong>.learning.<br />

outcomes..It.promotes.pedagogical.innovati<strong>on</strong>.and.development.by.<br />

encouraging.reflecti<strong>on</strong>.<strong>on</strong>.learning.goals.and.suggesting.pedagogical.strategies.to.meet.those.goals..Instructors.are.encouraged.to.tailor.their.assessment.instruments.to.their.classroom.pedagogies.and.<br />

to.measure.students’.learning.gains.relative.to.their.specific.learning.<br />

goals..The. SALG. embeds. current. research. <strong>on</strong>. how. people. learn,.<br />

and.extensive.testing.shows.that.the.results.are.valid.and.reliable..<br />

(Science.Educati<strong>on</strong>.for.New.Civic.Engagement.and.Resp<strong>on</strong>sibility).project.designed.to.foster.collaborati<strong>on</strong>s.between.future.science.teachers.and.envir<strong>on</strong>mental.educators.for.the.benefit.<strong>of</strong>.all.stakeholders..The.project.resulted.in.the.creati<strong>on</strong>.<strong>of</strong>.the.capst<strong>on</strong>e.course,.Workshop.Biology/Chemistry,.for.LMU’s.sec<strong>on</strong>dary.science.educati<strong>on</strong>.majors..Broad.issues.related.to.water.and.the.envir<strong>on</strong>ment.<br />

form.the.core.<strong>of</strong>.the.course,.whereas.individual.projects.focus.<strong>on</strong>.<br />

topics. relevant. to. the. <strong>San</strong>ta. M<strong>on</strong>ica. Bay. and. Los.Angeles. River.<br />

watersheds..LMU.students.collaborate.with.envir<strong>on</strong>mental.educators.<br />

from. Heal. the. Bay. and. Envir<strong>on</strong>mental. Charter. High. School.<br />

in.the.design.<strong>of</strong>.service.learning.projects.that.enable.high.school.<br />

students.to.address.envir<strong>on</strong>mental.issues.within.their.community..<br />

As.a.result,.both.groups.<strong>of</strong>.students.strengthen.their.ties.to.the.community.<br />

and. begin. to. appreciate. the. c<strong>on</strong>necti<strong>on</strong>. between. envir<strong>on</strong>mental.health.and.community.health..Science.c<strong>on</strong>tent.becomes.relevant,.and.each.student.begins.to.think.about.his/her.role.in.a.wider.<br />

c<strong>on</strong>text..The. science. curricula. created. as. part. <strong>of</strong>. the. project. will.<br />

become.an.<strong>on</strong>line.service.learning.resource.available.through.Heal.<br />

the.Bay.(Healthebay.org)..By.sharing.our.experiences.we.hope.to.<br />

studying.Forensics,.students.learn.about.ways.to.prevent.themselves.<br />

and.others.from.getting.into.situati<strong>on</strong>s.where.they.could.be.harmed.<br />

One. topic. in. Forensics. is. the. study. <strong>of</strong>. drugs..A. local. police.<br />

drug.recogniti<strong>on</strong>.expert.comes.and.gives.a.very.interactive.presentati<strong>on</strong>.about.alcohol..He.dem<strong>on</strong>strates.various.field.sobriety.tests.<br />

and.has.students.wear.glasses.that.give.them.the.visual.impressi<strong>on</strong>.<br />
