Mycobacterium tuberculosis (MTB). is. the. pathogen. resp<strong>on</strong>sible.for.the.disease.tuberculosis.in.humans..According.to.the.<str<strong>on</strong>g>World</str<strong>on</strong>g>.<br />
Health.Organizati<strong>on</strong>,.<strong>on</strong>e.in.three.individuals.worldwide.has.a.latent.<br />
MTB.infecti<strong>on</strong>,.and.5.to.10%.<strong>of</strong>.infected.individuals.will.develop.<br />
the.disease..The.analysis.<strong>of</strong>.ancient.microbial.DNA.associated.with.<br />
past.human.infecti<strong>on</strong>s.is.useful.in.defining.the.spatial.and.temporal.associati<strong>on</strong>s.between.humans.and.their.pathogens..In.1999,.an.<br />
ancient.individual.was.recovered.from.a.glacier.in.northern.British.<br />
Columbia,.Canada..Radiocarb<strong>on</strong>.dates.<strong>of</strong>.the.Kwäday Dän Ts’ìnchi<br />
site.indicated.a.timeframe.<strong>of</strong>.AD.1670.to.1850,.which.is.either.prec<strong>on</strong>tact.or.early.European.c<strong>on</strong>tact.for.that.area..Based.<strong>on</strong>.current.M.<br />
tuberculosis.infecti<strong>on</strong>.rates.and.the.potential.for.determining.if.the.<br />
site.was.prec<strong>on</strong>tact.based.<strong>on</strong>.identifying.M. tuberculosis.polymorphisms.associated.with.specific.populati<strong>on</strong>s,.the.ancient.individual’s.tissues.were.tested.for.the.presence.<strong>of</strong>.M.<br />
tuberculosis.DNA.<br />
Even.though.a.pathological.and.histological.examinati<strong>on</strong>.was.negative,.M.<br />
tuberculosis.complex.DNA.was.identified.in.the.lung.tissue.<br />

archaeological. human. or. animal. remains.. Envir<strong>on</strong>mental. c<strong>on</strong>diti<strong>on</strong>s.<br />

changes. to. the. keratin. material.. Humidity,. temperature,. pH. and.<br />
specific.chemical.influences.during.the.preservati<strong>on</strong>.process.change.<br />

The.degree.<strong>of</strong>.structural.stability.<strong>of</strong>.the.fibres.gives.an.indicati<strong>on</strong>.about.storage.c<strong>on</strong>diti<strong>on</strong>s.and.can.be.used.as.a.guideline.in.view.<br />
for.the.c<strong>on</strong>servati<strong>on</strong>.<strong>of</strong>.the.keratin.fibres..<br />

From.an.archaeological.perspective,.hair.serves.not.<strong>on</strong>ly.as.an.<br />
ornament.<strong>of</strong>.appearance.but.also.provides.insight.into.social.and.<br />
ec<strong>on</strong>omic.standing,.health.status,.and.seas<strong>on</strong>al.cycles.<strong>of</strong>.customs.<br />
and.practices..To.date,.the.remains.<strong>of</strong>.76.women.between.the.ages.<br />
<strong>of</strong>.16.and.70.years.<strong>of</strong>.age.at.death,.all.retaining.well-preserved.hair,.<br />
have.been.recovered.from.the.Kellis.2.Cemetery,.Dakhleh.Oasis,.<br />
Egypt..These.women.are.thought.to.be.associated.with.the.nearby.<br />
Roman. administrative. center. <strong>of</strong>. Kellis. (c.. 50–450. AD).. Macroscopic.study.<strong>on</strong>.this.porti<strong>on</strong>.<strong>of</strong>.the.cemetery.populati<strong>on</strong>.has.yielded.<br />
results. c<strong>on</strong>cerning. hairstyles. and. hair. preparati<strong>on</strong>. prior. burial..<br />
Microscopic.study.has.provided.insight.into.practices.<strong>of</strong>.hair.care.<br />
and.general.living.c<strong>on</strong>diti<strong>on</strong>s.within.the.community..Isotopic.analyses.have.provided.an.even.greater.wealth.<strong>of</strong>.informati<strong>on</strong>.c<strong>on</strong>cerning.health.status,.pregnancy,.seas<strong>on</strong>al.diet,.and.the.aging.process.<br />

arid.desert,.is.rich.in.archaeological.remains.<strong>of</strong>.settlement.and.irrigated.<br />
field. systems. spanning. approximately. 2000. years. from. the.<br />
Early.Horiz<strong>on</strong>.(500.B.C.).to.the.Spanish.C<strong>on</strong>quest..This.research.<br />
aims.to.understand.how.subsistence.strategies,.influenced.by.both.<br />
biological.and.social.factors,.evolved.during.this.period.using.isotopic.<br />
analysis. <strong>of</strong>. human. tissues.. Previous. archaeobotanical. work.<br />
suggests. that. a. gradual. transformati<strong>on</strong>. took. place. as. natural. and.<br />
anthropogenic. changes. took. their. toll. <strong>on</strong>. the. envir<strong>on</strong>ment..Additi<strong>on</strong>ally,.<br />
repeated. cultural. transiti<strong>on</strong>s. provided. social. impetus. for.<br />
ec<strong>on</strong>omic.based.changes.<br />
Isotopic.dietary.informati<strong>on</strong>.obtained.from.mummified.human.<br />
remains.has.been.used.to.investigate.three.main.transiti<strong>on</strong>s:.a).the.<br />
Late.Ocucaje.to.Early.Nasca.cultural.transiti<strong>on</strong>.(c..200.B.C..-.200.<br />
A.D.);.b).the.Late.Nasca.to.Wari.transiti<strong>on</strong>.(c..800.-.1000.A.D.).<br />
during.which.there.was.a.gradual.collapse.<strong>of</strong>.the.desert.ecosystem;.<br />
and.c).the.transiti<strong>on</strong>.from.the.Wari.to.the.regi<strong>on</strong>ally.developed.Ica-<br />
Chincha.period.(1000.-.1400.A.D.)..<br />
Results.from.the.isotopic.analysis.<strong>of</strong>.b<strong>on</strong>e.collagen.show.the.<br />
diet.<strong>of</strong>.each.period.to.be.subtly.different,.with.a.range.<strong>of</strong>.resources.<br />
potentially. being. exploited.. Several. explanati<strong>on</strong>s. can. be. put. forward.<br />
indicating. that. the. subsistence. strategies. cannot. be. simply.<br />
defined.as.‘hunter-gatherer’.or.‘agriculturalist’..Isotopic.analysis.<strong>of</strong>.
