Center. is. to. sustain. the. quality.<strong>of</strong>.life.<strong>of</strong>.our.patients.who.suffer.from.facial.defects.and. dysfuncti<strong>on</strong>..What. are. the. functi<strong>on</strong>s. <strong>of</strong>. the. human. face?. In. “The. Expressi<strong>on</strong>.<strong>of</strong>.Emoti<strong>on</strong>s.in.Man.and.Animals”.published.in.1872,. Charles.Darwin.proposed.that.the.innate.facial.expressi<strong>on</strong>.was.universal.am<strong>on</strong>g.all.human.races.and.obtained.through.our.evoluti<strong>on</strong>al. process..Emoti<strong>on</strong>al.experiences.in.the.brain.immediately.activate. neuro-muscular.networks,.resulting.in.the.delicate.modulati<strong>on</strong>.<strong>of</strong>. smooth. muscles. <strong>of</strong>. vasculature. and. intestinal. systems. and. arrector.pili.<strong>of</strong>.hair.follicles,.as.well.as.skeletal.muscles.<strong>of</strong>.shoulders,. arms.and.legs..However,.the.most.significant.emoti<strong>on</strong>al.influence. may.be.projected.to.the.facial.muscles,.resulting.in.the.recognizable. changes.in.facial.form..The.facial.expressi<strong>on</strong>.<strong>of</strong>.emoti<strong>on</strong>s.plays.the. most.significant.role.in.n<strong>on</strong>-verbal.communicati<strong>on</strong>. Various.disorders.affect.the.central.or.peripheral.nervous.systems.and.interfere.with.the.ability.to.c<strong>on</strong>trol.facial.expressi<strong>on</strong>..As.a. result,.these.patients.are.isolated.from.social.networks..It.has.been. noted.in.many.cases.that.innate.and.voluntary.facial.expressi<strong>on</strong>s. are.differentially.affected,.suggesting.that.the.voluntary.c<strong>on</strong>trol.<strong>of</strong>. facial. expressi<strong>on</strong>. is. regulated. through. a. separate. mechanism.. In. fact,.a.large.part.<strong>of</strong>.social.communicati<strong>on</strong>.today.may.be.achieved. by.the.voluntary.facial.expressi<strong>on</strong>,.which.is.c<strong>on</strong>sidered.unique.to. humans.and.thus.may.be.acquired.through.evoluti<strong>on</strong>al.development. <strong>of</strong>.the.neuro-muscular.system.<strong>of</strong>.the.face. The.therapeutic.use.<strong>of</strong>.both.innate.and.voluntary.facial.expressi<strong>on</strong>s.may.provide.a.clue.in.addressing.the.ill-fated.biopsychosocial.network.<strong>of</strong>.our.patients..In.order.to.engineer.the.lost.smile,.a.c<strong>on</strong>cept.<strong>of</strong>.NeuroEngineering.is.currently.being.developed.
