The.idea.that.self-care.is.a.primary.obligati<strong>on</strong>.for.mental.health.<br />

pr<strong>of</strong>essi<strong>on</strong>als.is.an.interesting.noti<strong>on</strong>.that.should.be.addressed..The.<br />

c<strong>on</strong>sensus.am<strong>on</strong>g.many.mental.health.pr<strong>of</strong>essi<strong>on</strong>als.is.that.self-care.<br />

is.an.ethical.imperative..Without.caring.for.themselves,.it.is.unlikely.<br />

that. they. will. be. able. to. optimally. care. for. their. clients.. Mental.<br />

health. pr<strong>of</strong>essi<strong>on</strong>als. involved. in. death. penalty. cases. may. experience.increased.stress.due.to.operating.in.forensic.settings,.having.<br />

to.c<strong>on</strong>fr<strong>on</strong>t.and.negotiate.their.own.beliefs.and.ethics.regarding.the.<br />

death.penalty,.and.being.c<strong>on</strong>fr<strong>on</strong>ted.with.the.imminent.executi<strong>on</strong>.<strong>of</strong>.<br />

their.client(s)..Inmates.receiving.services.from.mental.health.pr<strong>of</strong>essi<strong>on</strong>als.<strong>of</strong>ten.present.with.l<strong>on</strong>eliness,.powerlessness,.hopelessness,.<br />

dehumanizati<strong>on</strong>,. demoralizati<strong>on</strong>,. tensi<strong>on</strong>,. decay,. apathy,. and. psychological.pressure.(Brown.and.Benningfield,.2008)..Mental.health.<br />

pr<strong>of</strong>essi<strong>on</strong>als.are.ethically.obligated.to.help.their.clients.with.these.<br />

particular. symptoms. while. operating. under. the. realizati<strong>on</strong>. <strong>of</strong>. the.<br />

inevitable.death.<strong>of</strong>.their.clients..To.ensure.that.mental.health.pr<strong>of</strong>essi<strong>on</strong>als.are.practicing.at.their.highest.level.<strong>of</strong>.functi<strong>on</strong>ing,.and.are.<br />

not.compromised.by.stress.or.burnout,.they.should.be.encouraged.<br />

The. electr<strong>on</strong>ic. properties. <strong>of</strong>. nanoscale. c<strong>on</strong>ductors. are. very.<br />

sensitive.to.their.envir<strong>on</strong>ment,.and.this.property.has.led.to.a.decadel<strong>on</strong>g.investigati<strong>on</strong>.<strong>of</strong>.potential.chemical.sensor.and.biosensor.applicati<strong>on</strong>s..Single.walled.carb<strong>on</strong>.nanotubes.(SWCNTs).are.particularly.<br />

appealing.elements.because.they.are.hollow.c<strong>on</strong>ductors.with.all.<strong>of</strong>.<br />

their. c<strong>on</strong>ducti<strong>on</strong>. electr<strong>on</strong>s. <strong>on</strong>. the. exposed. surface.. Recently,. we.<br />

have.dem<strong>on</strong>strated.single.molecule.dynamic.sensitivity.using.field.<br />

effect.transistors.made.out.<strong>of</strong>.individual.SWCNTs.(1)..<br />

Similar. devices. have. now. been. applied. to. the. problem. <strong>of</strong>.<br />

sensing. protein. dynamics. in. physiologically-relevant. soluti<strong>on</strong>s..<br />

Our.work.focuses.<strong>on</strong>.the.dynamics.<strong>of</strong>.the.lysozyme.enzyme..By.<br />

attaching.a.lysozyme.to.a.SWCNT.device,.we.have.accomplished.<br />

real-time. m<strong>on</strong>itoring. <strong>of</strong>. lysozyme’s. single. molecule. dynamics..<br />

Electr<strong>on</strong>ic.m<strong>on</strong>itoring.with.a.temporal.resoluti<strong>on</strong>.<strong>of</strong>.10.microsec<strong>on</strong>ds.occurs.as.the.mechanical.moti<strong>on</strong>s.<strong>of</strong>.the.protein.cause.changes.in.the.c<strong>on</strong>ductance.<strong>of</strong>.the.SWCNT..Acquisiti<strong>on</strong>.times.can.be.c<strong>on</strong>tinued.for.tens.<strong>of</strong>.minutes,.allowing.for.the.investigati<strong>on</strong>.<strong>of</strong>.a.single.<br />

protein.over.a.wide.range.<strong>of</strong>.time.scales..This.data.helps.to.address.<br />

uncertainty. c<strong>on</strong>cerning. the. mechanism. <strong>of</strong>. lysozyme’s. enzymatic.<br />

turnover.. Analysis. <strong>of</strong>. the. changes. in. c<strong>on</strong>ductance. show. various.<br />

Poiss<strong>on</strong>.processes.that.may.be.related.to.the.hinge.moti<strong>on</strong>.<strong>of</strong>.the.<br />

lysozyme. molecule. during. n<strong>on</strong>-catalytic. and. catalytic. binding. <strong>of</strong>.<br />

the.peptidoglycan.substrate..Furthermore,.the.single.molecule.rates.<br />

show.the.expected.pH.dependence.<br />

This. presentati<strong>on</strong>. describes. a. novel. type. <strong>of</strong>. scanning. probe.<br />

characterizati<strong>on</strong>. called. scanning. gate. spectroscopy. (SGS).. Our.<br />

method.is.based.up<strong>on</strong>.scanning.gate.microscopy,.a.technique.for.<br />

characterizing.the.electr<strong>on</strong>ic.properties.<strong>of</strong>.a.surface.and,.in.particular,.<br />

<strong>of</strong>. electr<strong>on</strong>ic. devices.. Scanning. gate. microscopy. has. proven.<br />

very.important.for.understand.nanomaterials.and.how.they.might.<br />

be.used.in.circuits..<br />

In. the. new. SGS. technique,. we. have. extended. the. usefulness.<br />

<strong>of</strong>.scanning.gate.microscopy.by.acquiring.images.using.a.c<strong>on</strong>tinuous.range.<strong>of</strong>.probe.potentials..The.result.captures.not.just.a.surface.image,.but.also.the.energy.dependence.<strong>of</strong>.scattering.sites,.boundaries,.and.other.electr<strong>on</strong>ic.surface.features..As.an.example,.we.investigate.resistance.al<strong>on</strong>g.a.single-walled.carb<strong>on</strong>.nanotube.(SWCNT)..<br />

SGS.clearly.observes.the.individual.sites.that.c<strong>on</strong>tribute.most.to.a.<br />

SWCNT.resistance,.including.defects.or.chemical.attachments.that.<br />

are.not.visible.topographically..Furthermore,.SGS.directly.resolves.<br />

the.energy.spectrum.<strong>of</strong>.electr<strong>on</strong>ic.scattering.at.a.defect.site.and.allows.<br />

us.to.extract.the.effective.barrier.width.and.heights.<strong>of</strong>.such.features.<br />

Nanoscale.devices.traditi<strong>on</strong>ally.rely.<strong>on</strong>.external.voltage.sources.<br />

for. power,. e.g.,. batteries,. fuel. cells,. power. supplies.. In. principle,.<br />

however,.electric.potentials.and.fields.at.the.microscale.can.be.established.between.dissimilar.metals.and.semic<strong>on</strong>ductors.via.the.dissimilar.chemical.potentials.<strong>of</strong>.their.mobile.charge.carriers..These.endogenous.<br />

potentials. and. fields. can. be. sustained. indefinitely. without.<br />

power.c<strong>on</strong>sumpti<strong>on</strong>.and.can.regenerate.quickly.at.system.boundaries..It.has.been.proposed.that.these.fields.can.lead.to.challenges.to.the.<br />

sec<strong>on</strong>d.law.when.incorporated.in.MEMS.and.NEMS.devices.[1,2]..A.<br />

decade-l<strong>on</strong>g.objecti<strong>on</strong>.to.these.challenges.has.been.that.endogenous.<br />

fields.have.not.been.experimentally.measured..This.paper.details.the.<br />

experimental.verificati<strong>on</strong>.<strong>of</strong>.the.magnitudes.and.locati<strong>on</strong>s.<strong>of</strong>.these.<br />

predicted.fields,.using.scanning.Kelvin.probe.microscopy.<br />
