trophic.levels..Morphological.measurements.and.activities.<strong>of</strong>.the.<br />

enzymes. lactate. dehydrogenase. (LDH). and. citrate. synthase. (CS).<br />

were.used.to.assess.the.metabolic.status.<strong>of</strong>.E. superba collected.at.<br />

various.distances.from.free-drifting.icebergs.in.the.Atlantic.sector.<br />

<strong>of</strong>. the. Southern. Ocean. over. three. seas<strong>on</strong>s.. Krill. collected. during.<br />

late.spring.were.larger.and.had.higher.enzyme.activity.compared.to.<br />

krill.captured.in.late.fall..Male.krill.generally.had.higher.activities.<br />

<strong>of</strong>. LDH. than. females. (especially. during. the. late. spring),. but. CS.<br />

activities.were.similar.between.males.and.females..There.was.no.<br />

c<strong>on</strong>sistent.pattern.in.physical.and.metabolic.indicators.am<strong>on</strong>g.krill.<br />

with.distance.from.different.icebergs,.and.in.many.cases.significant.<br />

differences.were.found.in.these.indicators.am<strong>on</strong>g.samples.from.the.<br />

same.distance..These.results.suggest.that.physiological.c<strong>on</strong>diti<strong>on</strong>.in.<br />

E. superba.is.influenced.primarily.by.seas<strong>on</strong>al.variati<strong>on</strong>.and.not.by.<br />

proximity.to.an.iceberg.<br />

Recent.warming.in.the.Antarctic.has.increased.iceberg.producti<strong>on</strong>,.with.ecological.effects.that.are.not.yet.well-understood..We.<br />

studied.macrozooplankt<strong>on</strong>.and.micr<strong>on</strong>ekt<strong>on</strong>.in.the.upper.300.m.<strong>of</strong>.<br />

the.water.column.near.free-drifting.icebergs.in.the.Atlantic.sector.<strong>of</strong>.<br />

the.Southern.Ocean.during.three.seas<strong>on</strong>s..Communities.were.dominated.<br />

in. all. seas<strong>on</strong>s. by.Antarctic. krill. (Euphausia superba). and.<br />

salps.(Salpa thomps<strong>on</strong>i),.which.collectively.comprised.60-95%.<strong>of</strong>.<br />

the.community.wet.biomass.in.most.cases..During.spring.and.summer,.mean.biomass.was.elevated.within.0.4.km.<strong>of</strong>.large.icebergs.<br />

vs..>9.km.away..No.trend.in.biomass.with.distance.was.apparent.<br />

in.late.fall,.when.total.biomass.was.relatively.low..Biomass.levels.<br />

near.icebergs.during.spring.and.summer.were.comparable.to.values.<br />

from. highly. productive. marginal. ice. z<strong>on</strong>es.. Sample. variance.<br />

also. was. significantly. higher. within. 1.85. km. <strong>of</strong>. icebergs. during.<br />

spring.and.summer,.reflecting.increased.patchiness.<strong>on</strong>.scales.<strong>of</strong>.10 4 .<br />

m 3 ..This.trend.was.not.significant.during.late.fall..Large.predatory.<br />

medusae.were.observed.within.1.85.km.<strong>of</strong>.icebergs.and.in.areas.<br />

through.which.icebergs.pass.frequently,.but.were.virtually.absent.in.<br />

areas.remote.from.icebergs..Small.euphausiids.showed.an.inverse.<br />

distributi<strong>on</strong>,.with.low.densities.in.areas.populated.by.large.medusae..Our.results.suggest.that.the.macrozooplankt<strong>on</strong>.and.micr<strong>on</strong>ekt<strong>on</strong>.<br />

assemblages. near. free-drifting. icebergs. can. be. quantitatively.<br />

and.qualitatively.different.from.those.in.surrounding,.iceberg-free.<br />

waters,.perhaps.due.to.both.bottom-up.and.top-down.processes.as.<br />

well.as.physical.forcing.by.the.passage.<strong>of</strong>.a.large.object.through.the.<br />

Six. experiments. are. described. that. take. well-established.<br />

psychological. effects. <strong>on</strong>. human. cogniti<strong>on</strong>. and. affect. and. “timereverse”.<br />

them. so. that. the. individual’s. resp<strong>on</strong>ses. are. obtained.<br />

before. the. putatively. causal. stimulus. events. occur.. For. example,.<br />

two.experiments.tested.for.the.retroactive facilitati<strong>on</strong> <strong>of</strong> recall:.It.<br />

is.well.known.that.rehearsing.or.practicing.a.set.<strong>of</strong>.verbal.materials.<br />

enhances.an.individual’s.ability.to.recall.them.<strong>on</strong>.a.subsequent.test..<br />

In.our.experiment,.participants.are.first.shown.48.comm<strong>on</strong>.words.<br />

<strong>on</strong>e.at.a.time.and.are.then.asked.to.recall.as.many.<strong>of</strong>.those.words.<br />

as.they.can..They.are.then.given.practice.exercises.<strong>on</strong>.a.randomly.<br />

selected.subset.<strong>of</strong>.those.words..The.results.show.that.participants.<br />

recalled. more. <strong>of</strong>. the. words. they. later. practiced. than. the. c<strong>on</strong>trol.<br />

words.they.did.not.practice..Two.experiments.<strong>on</strong>.retroactive priming<br />

provide. evidence. for. retroactive. influence. <strong>on</strong>. an. individual’s.<br />

resp<strong>on</strong>se.times.when.judging.the.pleasantness.or.unpleasantness.<strong>of</strong>.<br />

visual.stimuli..Finally,.two.experiments.provide.evidence.for.the.<br />

retroactive habituati<strong>on</strong> to.emoti<strong>on</strong>ally.arousing.visual.stimuli..Each.<br />

<strong>of</strong>.the.six.experiments.was.independently.statistically.significant,.<br />

and.across.all.six,.the.combined.z =.3.66,.p =..0001,.with.an.effect.<br />

into. being. unless. there. is. a. sufficient. reas<strong>on</strong>. why. that. particular.<br />

thing.should.happen..This.principle.is.usually.attributed.to.Leibniz,.although.the.first.recorded.Western.philosopher.to.use.it.was.<br />

Anaximander. <strong>of</strong>. Miletus..The. demand. that. nature. be. rati<strong>on</strong>al,. in.<br />

the.sense.that.it.be.compatible.with.the.principle.<strong>of</strong>.sufficient.reas<strong>on</strong>,.c<strong>on</strong>flicts.with.a.basic.feature.<strong>of</strong>.c<strong>on</strong>temporary.orthodox.physical.theory,.namely.the.noti<strong>on</strong>.that.nature’s.resp<strong>on</strong>se.to.the.probing.<br />

acti<strong>on</strong>.<strong>of</strong>.an.observer.is.determined.by.pure.chance,.and.hence.<strong>on</strong>.<br />

the.basis.<strong>of</strong>.absolutely.no.reas<strong>on</strong>.at.all..This.appeal.to.pure.chance.<br />

can. be. deemed. to. have. no. rati<strong>on</strong>al. fundamental. place. in. reas<strong>on</strong>based.<br />

Western. science.. It. is. argued. here,. <strong>on</strong>. the. basis. <strong>of</strong>. other.<br />

basic.principles.<strong>of</strong>.quantum.physics,.that.in.a.world.that.c<strong>on</strong>forms.<br />

to.the.principle.<strong>of</strong>.sufficient.reas<strong>on</strong>,.the.usual.quantum.statistical.<br />

rule.will.naturally.emerge.at.the.pragmatic.level,.in.cases.where.<br />

the.reas<strong>on</strong>.behind.nature’s.choice.<strong>of</strong>.resp<strong>on</strong>se.is.unknown,.but.that.<br />

the.usual.statistics.can.become.biased.in.an.empirically.manifest.<br />

way.when.the.reas<strong>on</strong>.for.the.choice.is.empirically.identifiable..It.is.<br />

shown.here.that.if.the.quantum.statistical.rule.were.to.be.biased.in.<br />

this.way.then.the.basically.forward-in-time.unfolding.<strong>of</strong>.empirical.<br />

reality.described.by.orthodox.quantum.mechanics.would.generate.<br />
