physical.symptoms..These.wide.ranging.symptoms.are.caused.by.the.<br />

silencing. <strong>of</strong>. a. single. gene,. denoted. Fmr1.. In. unaffected. individuals,.<br />

this.gene.is.active.and.produces.a.protein.(FMRP).that.regulates.the.<br />

de.novo.synthesis.<strong>of</strong>.hundreds.<strong>of</strong>.other.proteins.at.synapses..Intensive,.<br />

multidisciplinary.studies.<strong>of</strong>.FMRP.and.synaptic.dysfuncti<strong>on</strong>s.that.arise.<br />

from.its.absence.in.Fragile.X.syndrome.have.provided.exciting.insights.<br />
