2012 Kings Row
Checkerboard Vineyards has the unusual distinction of possessing
vineyards planted at elevations ranging from 600 to 2000 feet on
Napa Valley’s Diamond Mountain. Their vineyard elevations protect
them from extreme temperature spikes and keep them in bright
sunlight from sunrise to sunset throughout the growing season – even
when the valley is cloaked in fog. The drive through Checkerboard
Vineyards climbs for three miles from the valley floor to the summit,
traversing canyons and deeply wooded knolls with the vineyards
located in the meadows formed by each distinct hill. The woodlands
of redwood, madrone, oak, maple and firare left unfenced as wildlife
runs and are home to deer, foxes, coyotes, bobcats, mountain lions,
and even black bear.
2012 Kings Row is a companion wine to the Checkerboard single
vineyard bottlings and represents the second selection from the
estate. Blended from carefully chosen remaining lots, Kings Row is a
compilation of our vineyards and varietals and paints the portrait of
our remarkable property.
At the winery, each berry is examined before being hand-carried
in stainless buckets to new French oak barrels or small tapered
French oak tanks. The resulting lots are native yeast, whole berry
fermented separately over the next several months by renowned
winemaker Martha McClellan. Martha’s unfailing commitment to
meticulous winemaking practices nurtures each lot individually.
Following fermentation, the wine is gently placed into new French
oak cooperage where it rests in our 58.5-degree cave. It is their
privilege to present 2012 Kings Row, a wine that represents their
passion and commitment to the utmost quality from winegrowing
and winemaking.
