Ramey Wine Cellars
David Ramey started his career in wine with little more than a
degree in enology and a dream. Then, after nearly two decades of
creating benchmark wines for such California wineries as Matanzas
Creek, Chalk Hill, Dominus and Rudd, David Ramey and his wife Carla
founded Ramey Wine Cellars in 1996. “Owning one’s own winery is
the dream of every winemaker,” David says, looking back on the path
that led him to build his own. It took time, planning and a profound
understanding of how best to bring together all the elements—
from the grapes, to the winery materials, and a top-notch team of
professionals—to make it all work.
Consistently rated among the best wines in California, the winery
remains committed to Cabernet Sauvignon, Chardonnay and Syrah
as its primary varietals. Winery tours and tastings are available by
appointment.
Cameron Frey
Cameron joined Ramey Wine Cellars prior to the 2002 harvest and
has since been an integral part of crafting our award-winning wines.
Cameron was born and raised in Lodi, California before heading off
to California State University-Fresno. He graduated with a bachelor
of science in Enology and Chemistry in 1991, and promptly joining
Robert Mondavi Winery, where he was a master lab technician prior
to becoming assistant winemaker.
In 1996, Cameron joined Gallo of Sonoma Winery as assistant
winemaker, where he focused on Gallo’s first high-end Chardonnay,
Zinfandel and Syrah programs. In 2001, Cameron and his wife set off
to Italy where Cameron worked as harvest winemaker at Casa Girelli
Winery in Puglia, Italy.
Once he joined David Ramey and began building the team at Ramey
Wine Cellars, Cameron’s responsibilities have ranged from management
of all production tasks to hands on cellar work, development of
winemaking procedures, schedules, budgets and safety programs, as
well as occasionally lending a hand to sales and marketing.
In addition to managing the production team at Ramey Wine Cellars,
Cameron enjoys sailing on San Francisco Bay and coaching his twin
sons’ baseball team.
