At that time there was no system established<br />

among Seventh-day Adventists for susta<strong>in</strong><strong>in</strong>g the<br />

m<strong>in</strong>istry. If anyone cared to give them money, it<br />

was thankfully received, and the lack supplied by<br />

their hand labor. Due to these circumstances I was<br />

<strong>in</strong>vited by Elder J. N. Andrews to go to Waukon,<br />

Iowa, where he could secure a small piece of land<br />

on which to grow supplies for his family, and could<br />

speak to the people <strong>in</strong> that new country as the way<br />

might open. So on Oct. 4, 1856, J. T. Orton and I,<br />

with our families, left Rochester for Iowa <strong>in</strong> two<br />

lumber wagons. From Buffalo we took the steamer<br />

to Detroit, then by freight tra<strong>in</strong> to Chicago. On the<br />

11th, we started overland for Waukon, arriv<strong>in</strong>g<br />

Nov. 20. I moved to Waukon without any <strong>in</strong>tent of<br />

leav<strong>in</strong>g the truth or the m<strong>in</strong>istry.<br />

We found th<strong>in</strong>gs much different from what we<br />

expected. The country was so new and the<br />

<strong>in</strong>habitants so scattered there was little chance of<br />

hold<strong>in</strong>g meet<strong>in</strong>gs. High prices soon began to<br />
