waited until 4 p.m. while the freight was carried to<br />

a second steamer. At 11 p.m. we reached the Dalles<br />

where we boarded another tra<strong>in</strong> which took us<br />

around the Dalles to Celio. At 4 a.m. all the freight<br />

was transferred to another steamer tak<strong>in</strong>g us to<br />

Walula where we spent the night. At 9 a.m.<br />

Wednesday, we took passage on Dr. Baker's<br />

railroad reach<strong>in</strong>g Walla Walla after 55 hours from<br />

Portland. Elder VanHorn and I spent November<br />

visit<strong>in</strong>g believers <strong>in</strong> Upper Columbia and<br />

Northwest Oregon.<br />

In the summer of 1877, two families from<br />

Santa Rosa moved to St. Clair, Churchill County,<br />

Nevada, and later placed a call for me to come. I<br />

arrived at Wadsworth Station Feb. 1, 1878, and<br />

was met by Jackson Ferguson who took me 35<br />

miles across the desert to St. Clair, pass<strong>in</strong>g only<br />

one residence on the way. St. Clair is on the<br />

Carson River about six miles above the s<strong>in</strong>k, on the<br />

edge of the Great American Desert. It is 5 miles<br />

from "Rag Town," were the immigrants stopped<br />

on Carson River for a few days to change their<br />
