Grandfather was a devout Christian and lived<br />

his religion before his fellow men. It was not<br />

popular <strong>in</strong> those days to be a Methodist, and some<br />

of our Universalist neighbors resorted to ridicule<br />

and petty annoyances. As we would come home<br />

from church, we would sometimes f<strong>in</strong>d several<br />

lengths of fence pulled down and the cattle <strong>in</strong> the<br />

gra<strong>in</strong> field. Grandfather well knew who did the<br />

mischief for he would see them sneer<strong>in</strong>g as he<br />

drove out the cattle and put up the fence on<br />

Sunday, but he said noth<strong>in</strong>g. One summer day as<br />

the family came home, grandfather was astonished<br />

to see his f<strong>in</strong>e cherry trees stripped of large limbs<br />

of ripe cherries. Many weeks later they were<br />

discovered a half-mile away <strong>in</strong> a deep woods.<br />

Grandfather said noth<strong>in</strong>g, but prayed for his<br />

enemies.<br />

Amid all these perplex<strong>in</strong>g <strong>in</strong>cidents grandfather<br />

sought for grace to bear persecution without<br />

compla<strong>in</strong><strong>in</strong>g, often us<strong>in</strong>g a favorite expression, "It's<br />

a long road that doesn't have a turn <strong>in</strong> it." He<br />

expected there would be a respite after a while, and<br />
