At the time of our labors <strong>in</strong> Iowa, both Elder<br />

White and I were labor<strong>in</strong>g beyond our better<br />

judgment. On the morn<strong>in</strong>g of Aug. 24, I stepped<br />

off the tra<strong>in</strong> at Eddyville, expect<strong>in</strong>g to go with<br />

Brother Kaufman a few miles out to preach a<br />

funeral sermon for a sister who had been buried a<br />

few days before. The brother handed me a telegram<br />

which read: "Elder White paralyzed. Come to<br />

Battle Creek immediately." The conductor held the<br />

tra<strong>in</strong> for me to secure my ticket, and I went on to<br />

Battle Creek. When I arrived there and laid off my<br />

active labor, my bra<strong>in</strong> was so congested that I<br />

could not bear the jar of walk<strong>in</strong>g, except on tiptoes.<br />

In Battle Creek I met Dr. Lay, a devoted church<br />

member who had visited Jackson's "water cure" <strong>in</strong><br />

Dansville, New York, that he might learn their<br />

methods. After Elder White's stroke, he thought it<br />

best for the elder to go to Dansville for treatment,<br />

and on look<strong>in</strong>g over my case decided that I, too,<br />

needed water treatment and rest. So on Sept. 14,<br />

the Whites and I, accompanied by Dr. Lay started<br />

for the "Home on the Hillside" at Danville, where<br />

we stayed until Dec. 7. After six weeks I recovered<br />
