We had about ten miles to go from there to the<br />

meet<strong>in</strong>g, and we sang and praised the Lord all the<br />

way.<br />

At the time of my baptism among the First-day<br />

Adventists <strong>in</strong> June, 1849, they had no formal<br />

organization. They did not keep any record of<br />

names. They claimed that on be<strong>in</strong>g baptized their<br />

names were entered <strong>in</strong> the "Book of <strong>Life</strong>" and that<br />

was sufficient. If, amid the opposition aga<strong>in</strong>st the<br />

Adventists which raged at that time, one had the<br />

courage to publicly accept the faith, they<br />

acknowledged them as brethren.<br />

At the shop where I worked, many customers<br />

would come <strong>in</strong> and talk of everyth<strong>in</strong>g but religion.<br />

Whenever they talked with me, I would try to turn<br />

the conversation to religious matters, and to the<br />

great subject of the near com<strong>in</strong>g of the Lord. Some<br />

would listen and seem deeply affected; others<br />

would mock and ridicule, but this only made me<br />

the stronger. After my day's work was done, I<br />

would often sit up until midnight with candle and<br />
