Western It<strong>in</strong>erary<br />

The Sabbath follow<strong>in</strong>g the Vergennes meet<strong>in</strong>g,<br />

Elder Cornell and I met with the little company at<br />

Grand Rapids. We were told that a steamer crossed<br />

Lake Michigan from Grand River to Milwaukee,<br />

Wiscons<strong>in</strong>, so we planned to cross, tak<strong>in</strong>g our<br />

horse and carriage, and labor among the scattered<br />

brethren <strong>in</strong> the West.<br />

On Monday we started for the mouth of the<br />

Grand River on the Lake Michigan shore. Th<strong>in</strong>k<strong>in</strong>g<br />

to make the distance <strong>in</strong> half a day, we did not take<br />

much food, but to our dismay we had a forty-mile<br />

drive. After eat<strong>in</strong>g our meager lunch we became<br />

hungry by two o'clock. While pass<strong>in</strong>g through a<br />

grove of p<strong>in</strong>e trees, we came upon a half-acre<br />

thickly covered with w<strong>in</strong>tergreen plants. What a<br />

sight of berries we could pluck by the handful!<br />

This f<strong>in</strong>d well supplied our lack of food.<br />

Toward even<strong>in</strong>g we stopped at a hotel by the<br />
