There is a lot of media coverage on the
damages and deaths from the earthquake
in Nepal as well as the amount of aid
streaming in from countries around the
world. The event is presented in much
detail that it is not far from real-time
coverage. Even on social media, you can
see your network constantly exchanging
information or joining in on Nepal-related
activities. How does the information we
receive from these sources affect our
decision in helping Nepal?
In 2013, Ioannis Evangelidis and Bram
Van den Bergh studied the influence of
information on the decision to donate
after a natural disaster through the analysis
of information on natural disaster-related
donations from 2000 to 2011. They found
that the number of deaths correlate directly
to the amount of donations: the more deaths
counted, the higher the amount of donations.
However, when looking at the numbers
of people who were affected by the disaster,
such as people who lost their homes, it
was found that the amount of donations
could not be estimated from the number
of people affected. Evangelidis and Van
den Bergh conducted an experiment that
also returned the same results. It was
therefore concluded that people’s decisions
on whether or not to donate are
highly influenced by the number of deaths
from the event.
According to the two researchers, this
donation behavior is inappropriate because
the people who actually need the aid
would be the survivors, not the deceased.
An earthquake, for instance, could kill
500 people, but leave millions of people
homeless and jobless. The researchers
therefore suggested that when the media
is presenting information about the
disaster in interest of donations, the
situation should be presented in a way
that encourages people to understand the
importance of survivors or those affected
by the disaster and their needs. This could
include explaining the consequences they
are currently facing as a result of the
disaster. Media consumers themselves
should also exercise good judgement on
what they see and hear.
