Coloured stones amount to 20% of Thailand’s<br />
global export, and almost all of that<br />
goes through Bangkok. In recent decades<br />
Gemopolis, an industrial estate near Bang<br />
Na, permanently houses some of the<br />
world’s largest gems and jewellery companies.<br />
At the centre of Bangkok is the Silom<br />
and Mahesak area where jewels are also<br />
traded nearly all times of day. Sellers are<br />
especially good at spotting fi rst-time tourists<br />
so do some research before you go to<br />
make sure you’re receiving a fair price for<br />
the gem you want. Rest assured, though,<br />
that some of the largest gem traders in<br />
Thailand still operate in this area and you’ll<br />
get a good deal as long as you know what<br />
you’re looking for.<br />
