The deduction one can make from these statistics are that in some Regions (such as<br />

Umbria and some southern Regions including Calabria and Sardegna) there is a “flatter”<br />

structure, which may indicate lower intensity of hospitalization, potentially inappropriate<br />

for the age classes most at risk (infants and the elderly).<br />

Still looking at the case mixes examined, one notes that the Northern Regions systematically<br />

record a higher average “cost” per hospitalization than do those of the South.<br />

For the ordinary regime, Friuli Venezia Giulia (149,9%) and Umbria (138,1%) are above<br />

average, whereas Sardegna (80,2%), Basilicata (80,4%) and Puglia (81,3%) are below the<br />

national average (Figure 9).<br />
