Venue operators have been able to use e-ticket<strong>in</strong>g to reduce box office<br />

operat<strong>in</strong>g costs <strong>and</strong> offer a better quality of service to customers. Fans can<br />

select their preferred seat, ticket type, <strong>and</strong> payment choice at a time <strong>and</strong> place<br />

that is convenient for their lifestyle. Box offices are limited by manpower <strong>and</strong><br />

the number of customer po<strong>in</strong>ts, such as box office w<strong>in</strong>dows or telephone<br />

l<strong>in</strong>es, whereas ticket<strong>in</strong>g systems are able to cope with peak dem<strong>and</strong> <strong>and</strong><br />

process transactions much quicker. This now means that some events can<br />

literally sell out <strong>in</strong> m<strong>in</strong>utes.<br />

Venue Solutions have further developed electronic ticket<strong>in</strong>g by creat<strong>in</strong>g a<br />

product that <strong>in</strong>tegrates with venue <strong>and</strong> bus<strong>in</strong>ess management systems. Venue-<br />

Cast, which has been developed <strong>in</strong> partnership with CRM specialist Pivotal<br />

Corporation, Siemens <strong>and</strong> Sony, <strong>in</strong>tegrates with ticket<strong>in</strong>g software supplier<br />

Synchro Systems. Dom<strong>in</strong>ic Berger, Manag<strong>in</strong>g Director of Venue Solutions,<br />

believes that ticket<strong>in</strong>g data is essential to <strong>sport</strong>s organizations for bus<strong>in</strong>ess plann<strong>in</strong>g:<br />

“Trends can be identified, ROI on market<strong>in</strong>g campaigns can be analyzed<br />

<strong>and</strong> new programs can be developed. By cross-referenc<strong>in</strong>g across multiple <strong>in</strong>formation<br />

sources, this adds value across all bus<strong>in</strong>ess departments.”<br />

Fulfillment <strong>and</strong> Access Control<br />

Technology has revolutionized the channels via which consumers can purchase<br />

tickets as well as the ways <strong>in</strong> which transactions can be fulfilled <strong>and</strong><br />

how <strong>sport</strong>s fans enter a venue.<br />

The traditional paper ticket is still a popular <strong>and</strong> versatile medium <strong>and</strong> has<br />

benefited from enhancements such as special <strong>in</strong>ks <strong>and</strong> barcodes. This has not<br />

only improved venue safety <strong>and</strong> security by reduc<strong>in</strong>g opportunities for counterfeit<br />

tickets <strong>and</strong> provid<strong>in</strong>g more efficient access control, but has also<br />

enhanced customer service.<br />

Some venues have <strong>in</strong>troduced kiosks to supplement the box office. The<br />

kiosks are able to read credit or debit card <strong>and</strong> <strong>in</strong>stantly pr<strong>in</strong>t tickets, thereby<br />

reduc<strong>in</strong>g queues at box office w<strong>in</strong>dows. They are particularly suited for<br />

ticket collections from the box office <strong>and</strong> also generate <strong>in</strong>cremental sales<br />

from walk-ups <strong>and</strong> by reduc<strong>in</strong>g walkaways. The NFL Atlanta Braves were<br />

one of the first organizations to <strong>in</strong>troduce kiosks <strong>and</strong> can process 2000 tickets<br />

per game from the units located at their Turner Field stadium. Kiosk technology<br />

has further evolved <strong>and</strong> can now be <strong>in</strong>tegrated with a turnstile so that<br />

customers no longer have to queue separately to first purchase a ticket only<br />

to then queue aga<strong>in</strong> to access the venue.<br />

Barcodes have also enabled pr<strong>in</strong>t-at-home ticket<strong>in</strong>g <strong>and</strong> have been applied to<br />

media such as smart cards <strong>and</strong> mobile phones. More <strong>sport</strong>s fans are now<br />
