MEDIEVAL & RENAISSANCE MUSIC CONFERENCE 2007 – WIEN, 7.-11. AUGUST ABSTRACTS
nahezu alle dort überlieferten Konkordanzen „are duplicated almost exactely“, wie Peter
Adrian Willaert: Singer, Composer … Editor?
Mittwoch/Wednesday, 8.8., 17.00 Uhr, KuGe, SR 1
About 30 years ago, in a characteristic aside to an essay about Adrian Willaert, Edward
Lowinsky first proposed that the young Flemish composer, then working in Ferrara, had
played some editorial role in the preparation of Antico’s unusual anthology Motetti novi e
chanzoni franciose a quatro sopra doi of 1520. In the intervening years much information has
been brought to light on the composers represented in that volume, not least Willaert
himself, and theories regarding other major sources of the period have been put forward
and debated. Scholars have also explored a variety of possible answers to the questions
surrounding the sources of repertoire and editing practices used by the early music printers,
culminating in Boorman’s recent monumental book on Petrucci. This paper aims to
bring these recent developments, and some new elements of my own, to bear on the
evaluation of Willaert’s possible involvement in Antico’s print, and attempts to define the
significance of such an involvement for Willaert’s early career, Ferrara’s role as a musical
centre, and the changing character of the repertory popular in North-Italian centres in the
early 16 th century.
