Editorial Enlit selects Germany for timely energy congress Dear readers, When Enlit Europe opens its doors at Messe Frankfurt on 29 November 2022, the 15,000 to 20,000 energy industry professionals expected to attend will be experiencing something both new and exciting, yet somewhat familiar. They may not be unacquainted with the name “Enlit”, but the two events that coalesced to form Enlit, POWER-GEN Europe and European Utility Week, will be well known to many, especially those from the host country, who attended POWER-GEN Europe on the numerous occasion it staged in Germany. But a large-scale conference and exhibition, bringing together, participants from one end of the energy transition to the other could not be better timed, or better located, given the unprecedented turmoil in the industry. In Germany and across Europe we see a sector reeling from the energy shock while, at the same time, looking to implement ambitious EU packages like The Green Deal, Fit For 55 and REPower EU. Today’s challenges require urgent action and change on a scale that is almost off the chart. In many countries, consumers are struggling with soaring energy bills, which are set to rise further and putting some energy companies in peril. Meanwhile, Western Europe is being held to ransom by Russian restrictions on gas flows, a hot summer is adding to demand and drying up hydro resources, all of which is leading to some coal-fired generation being brought back on line and a serious re-think of Germany’s nuclear phase-out. These are serious issues that have to be tackled, requiring short, medium and long-term strategies that will involve European collaboration across a wide cross section of actors, including the energy suppliers, their end-customers, network operators, equipment and service providers, market associations like VGBE, regulators and governments. All these stakeholders and more will be present at Enlit Europe, making it a unique melting pot for ideas and innovation, right along the energy value chain. From source to generation, from grid to consumer, the boundaries of the sector are blurring and this evolution is being shaped by established players, external disruptors, innovative start-ups and the increasingly engaged end-user. Enlit Europe brings all of these people together to seize current opportunities, spotlight future ones, and inspire the next generation to participate in the journey. Since its launch, Enlit has been building a global community of professionals engaged in aspects of the energy transition, who increasingly look to Enlit.World and its associated media titles, as a source of analysis and insights into the strategic and technological development occurring in the sector. Fresh news and analysis is delivered through websites, eNewsletters, podcasts, interviews and articles with the most recent feature being Enlit on the Road – a series that focuses on energy innovation and change occurring in a particular city of region. In Frankfurt later this year, the Enlit community will be joined by many energy experts from 29 November to 1 December, to meet and inspire each other and to develop their discussions and actions to take steps forward in the energy transition. Those three days of face-to-face interactions represent the climax of an endeavour that the Enlit community are engaged in 365-days a year – collaborating and innovating to solve the most pressing energy-related issues. It’s what makes Enlit not just any energy event. The hub theatres will be focusing on the 4 Ds of the energy transition: Decarbonisation, Digitalisation, Decentralisation and Democratisation and will bring inspiring leaders and experienced professionals to the stage to deliver top-class presentations and panels right onto the exhibition floor. The Enlit Europe Summit promises a new and exciting conference experience. Designed as a festival of energy knowledge, it showcases industry thought-leaders across three stages in totally contrasting formats. This is where the industry’s visionaries take the debate forward around the future direction of energy and interlinked sectors, such as transportation and heavy industry, leading the conversation when it comes to overcoming the roadblocks and identifying where the sweet spots for opportunity and innovation are. The Summit will put an emphasis on the sense of urgency to accelerate the energy transition while bolstering energy security. The sessions will bring you right up-to-date with the European Commission’s Action Plan, reveal sector integration in action, unpack the future of digitalisation, debate the most likely energy scenarios and much more. In summary, it’s delivering on the Enlit promise, to be the most “Inclusive guide to the energy transition”.
