and we have no problem getting the cows back

in calf as they are fit and healthy.”

Phillip Wood said “by purchasing pedigree

genetics we guarantee the high heritable

Limousin traits of excellent conformation, growth

rate and consistency are passed on from our

suckler cows onto the offspring when put back

to Limousin Bulls. Simon Wood added, “We like

the Bulls, they come out small and when you

see them in six – eight weeks time, you wouldn’t

recognise it. They come out like a deer and then

thrive everyday.”

The Limousin calves are offered creep feed from

the start until the suckler calf sales at Bishops

Castle in in October and November where

the Woods have built up a strong following of

buyers keen to purchase top-quality pure-bred

Limousin cattle. Cows are fed concentrates until

they are in calf otherwise only silage is offered

during the winter. Alongside the suckler cows

are 3000 breeding sheep which helps maintain

the mostly permanent pasture on the farms.

The future for Philip and Simon Wood is

definitely Limousin. With the breed running

through their veins, the success of their

enterprise is clear and the high demand for their

cattle shows no signs of retreating.
