2023
The comeback year
for Young Breeders
YOUNG LIMOUSIN
2022 was a quiet year for the Limousin
Young Breeders club after the groups
momentum was impacted by Covid
which made it difficult for the all important
meetings and learning opportunities to take
place. But new Chariman John Grisedale says
he’s bringing the Young Breeders club back
to life in 2023, and there’s lots to be excited
about.
Having been a member of the Young Breeders
club for many years, John Grisedale, age 25,
knows the benefits the club can have to a
young breeders confidence, breed knowledge
and future quality of stock. He comments,
“One of the best things about Young Breeders
is making good friends across the UK with
people associated with the breed we all know
and love. It’s also one of the best learning
opportunities you can have and that’s only
going to make you a better breeder in the
future. For anyone who wants to produce the
45,000 gns plus of the future sales, the Young
Breeders club will definitely help you on that
journey.”
Inspired by the clubs heydays of the past,
John has big ideas for his tenure as Chairman.
“I want to bring back the big events of the
past. Whether that’s learning Scholarships to
Canada, discovery trips to France to lean about
the breeds heritage or participating in Stock
Judging events where you have a chance to
represent your country. These are the things
we’re looking into for the Young Breeders Club
for 2023 and 24.”
And the club already has its first event on the
cards. At the Great Yorkshire Show in July this
year the National Stock judging event will take
place. The competition, which takes place every
year, sees young breeders compete in teams
for their country; England, Scotland, Wales,
Northern Ireland and the Republic of Ireland.
Competitors must place stock in the correct
order and give reasons for their decision.
Individual scores make up the teams overall
score to create the overall team of winners.
Having participated in the 2019 Anglo/
Irish Stock Judging event in Elphin, John
recants what a great experience it was. “It’s
an incredible opportunity. You are in a ring
judging some incredible pedigree animals. It
teaches you so much about the breed, your
own knowledge of the breed and your ability
to rank the cattle. But beyond the competition,
its also a fantastic chance to meet and socialise
with other young breeders.” In 2019 the ROI
hosts celebrated the competition with an
afternoon of escape room type games and a
dinner for all Young Breeders, giving everyone
a chance to share stories and learn from each
other”.
